Fox News appears to have removed their DOW ticker in a pattern for the company, choosing to block out the steep drop in DOW points after Trump’s tariff announcement

Sorry not related, but why do all conservative American news women have this over done make up and fake looking hair? It really moves them into creepy territory. Like sort of evil clown creepy.

Many conservative American women strive to look like this, not just the news anchors. Among the women in orbit around Trump there are several with this same look. It’s all very artificial, with lots of makeup and plastic surgery, but apparently it’s an ideal in Republican circles.

Some have suggested it’s because of puritanical upbringing. Girls learn how to do their makeup and the like by experimenting etc, but many puritanical families may act like a teen doing so is “dressing like a whore” or something. So they grow up it having the experience, and don’t know what to do so just imitate what they think they should look like instead of finding the look that looks good on them.

TV executives like Roger Ailes setting a standard conservative news anchorwoman aesthetic to draw in their target audience who goes for that classic American blonde. No ethnic minorities need apply. Pant suits discouraged: gotta put those gams behind transparent counters to work for the leg cam.

It is so much easier and comfortable to just close your eyes to the troubles of the world, but it also means that you won’t see what’s coming and will not be able to act. So this sort of sensory overload with negativity and craziness is kinda the point. The more people are tuned out and overwhelmed, the easier it is for assholes like Musk and Trump to push their agenda through. It’s also talked about in 1984, where the quote comes from

A woman literally said after we had discussed this that the salute wasn’t the salute.

As an old fart I’ve never lived under an administration that I considered a real threat. Even Reagan, who was raged against by the left and beloved by the right, at least had some restraint and considered his actions. Each president did something that I didn’t like but I never felt like psychopaths had taken over and were just letting their whims and manias run rampant. Their personalities also felt reasonable and at the very least respectful of others. I also never felt that a large chunk of my fellow citizens were a threat to democracy. The evangelicals were always that way but felt like a fringe group before.

Multiple times, in multiple court cases. Tucker Carlson argued that no regular viewer would consider his content news or factual.

The fact that they get away with this is infuriating. They should have to put a Surgeon General warning label on the screen like tobacco product have on the package.

“WARNING: This content is for entertainment purposes only. We acknowledge that most of the content presented is not factual, and most of the opinions are not based on reality. This platform was created explicitly as a right-wing propaganda outlet to spin damaging news stories and prevent another Republican from being impeached after Watergate. They used it as a defence in court. Multiple times. Something to the effect of “no reasonable person would believe they were being truthful/ serious.”

Edit: apparently this defence was only used for shows like O’Reilly and Tucker Carlson, not the whole channel. Personally I don’t think the average FN viewer would be able to discern the distinction, but who knows.

I agree to a certain extent, but what’s become clear to me as I get older, is that democracy represents the will of the electorate, and when your democracy is setup to give the dumbest 50% of the electorate the most representation, shit falls apart.

If we want a progressive, effective, and beneficial government, then we need an electorate that will vote for it. For a while, we’ve tried providing education and mostly free information access to the populace so they can make informed decisions, but it’s evident that the voters don’t care for that. The only other way to get past that information apathy is to eliminate their representation.

I don’t expect this to be a morally defensible position, but more “if we want to survive as a nation, we need to do something about people living in an alternate reality formed by regressive hate propaganda”.

In reality, “Democracy” as invented by the Greeks was never intended to be held by the uneducated. Ever citizen got a vote, but frankly not everyone was a citizen.

The rights of a citizen came with certain expectations, and that included knowledge of the Ars Liberalis, or “Liberal Arts”, which…far from today’s demonized meaning created in order to attack higher learning, literally translated in the greek world as “the exercise of freedom”.

In other words, citizenship and voting rights obligated a person to be knowledgeable of things like Logic, History, Rhetoric, etc… You TRAINED to partake in the affairs of state just like you would prepare for any other task that requires skill and THAT was what granted you the priviledge of citizenship. (Well…that an being part of the wealthy class…)

Modern “Democracy” is predicated on the opposite; not just citizens that are ill-informed, but citizens that are so intellectually incurious that they can’t be bothered to exercise their right properly.

            Absolutely.

I don’t think the qualifications for voting should be “white wealthly land-owning men”, but there has to be a filter we can use to validate that the person voting as at least 2 brain cells.

I’d like to have a basic test with blanket true/false statements around recent political talk… Maybe things like…

The 2020 election was conducted fairly without significant evidence of fraud that could have changed the result.

Vaccines have a direct and undeniable link to autism and long term damage.

Tariffs are an export tax paid by the country sending the product to another country.

Individuals with visas and green cards are not illegal immigrants.

Just a quick test like that, and then weight the vote based on how many statements they identififed correctly as True or false.

You need a way to prevent this from being corrupted. Conservatives would love to use this to prevent black folks from voting. They’re single minded and will chip away at it for decades.

Perhaps honey pots? Set up fake meetings to discuss how to prevent “those people” from voting, and everyone who attends is barred from working in government for life.

The same Constitution that upholds the right to vote is the same one that protects freedom of speech. I consider both options equally damaging to the underlying fabric of this country. The point being that republicans are already eroding the foundations of this nation to poison our water and air, shift wealth from the poorest people up to the richest, steal the money we’ve put aside for social services, and implement a Christian theocracy. It’s happening, so we might as well throw out the constitution as well, but use that gap to build a society where people are protected from discrimination because of immutable characteristics, and that builds for the long-term health, wellness and safety of it’s citizens.

Preventing corporate entities from presenting falsehoods as facts is not a meaningful infringement on free speech.

If it is, then it’s clear that truly free, totally unrestricted in any way speech isn’t a good idea.

All they’re trying to do there is control the narrative for local news. When it’s not beneficial for them to spread propaganda they won’t. They should still carry the warning. That station can either de-affiliate with Fox, or actual local news can fill the gap.

If his supporters believe in chem-trails, vaccines causing autism and maybe a flat earth then I’m not going to waste any energy looking to them for any sign of self awareness and to reconsider their choices.

Yeah. I see some people trying to talk down to those of us who just call them fucking idiots. “Well, is that any way to get them to see your point of view? How does that help any?”

My brother in Christ, we’ve tried doing that for the LAST 8 YEARS. If they haven’t gotten any more wise since then, and in fact doubled down for round 2, what the fuck else can you do but call the dumbass duck a dumbass duck?!

it seems to me like the people should have no problem coordinating an attack on fox news that would take them off the air. i feel like that’s an easy one to do that doesn’t require a leader, just anonymously post maps detailing the infrastructure of their studios, where security guards are posted, any known passkeys, etc.

Eh. I don’t care about Internet points, I just think it’s funny. And even though we’re on Lemmy we should probably still be careful about out-and-out calling for attacks against a rogue president’s favorite news station.

We can go politely ask them to stop broadcasting. In numbers.

no offense, but can we please stop with the goose and gander comparisons? it just feels like trying to slam dunk for internet points. we all know they’re hypocrites. let’s just focus on solutions rather than finger pointing.

that would take them off the air.

Not sure how hard that would be. Their disaster recovery plan would have to be pretty bad not to be able to switch to another geographic location in a hot minute. And if they’re still in Rockefeller, you’d probably have a hell getting past the elevators without them shutting it down. They probably have backup satellite uplink so you can’t just knock out their fiber.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for another Max Headroom, but I think we need to shut them down with fairness in broadcasting laws, or, gallows, just sayin’

Here is just the text for anyone who cares for their eyeballs

It appears as though FOX News removed their DOW ticker as it dropped 1,228 points today, following President Donald Trump’s tariff announcements.

A screenshot on X showcased the moment. In a clip, Kayleigh McEnany, Trump’s former press secretary, was on Fox speaking today as the DOW sank, and the screen was missing its usual DOW ticker.

It’s not the first time the conservative news giant has done so, as others have recorded them getting rid of their DOW ticker pretty much anytime there was a significant loss. There’s a clip of Trump on in August 2024, and as the DOW fell, the FOX ticker was removed.

It comes after Trump had to be ‘guided back’ on stage following his tariff-touting speech after ‘forgetting’ to sign his executive order, sparking health fears after yet another strange moment.

Buzzfeed reported the same back in March, when stocks first fell after Trump announced his original tariff plans.

Users on X responded with their usual: jokes about Fox news. “Fox News logic is if the ticker’s gone, the crash didn’t happen,” writes one user. Another laughed, “Good thing I developed object permanence when I was a baby.”

“Naturally, they would prefer that their audience remain oblivious to the impact Donald Trump’s tariffs are having on them,” said another.

Yesterday, President Trump announced far-reaching new tariffs on nearly all U.S. trading partners. The Trump tariff hikes included another 34% tax on imports from China, which was already looking at a 20% tariff hike, bringing the total tariffs on Chinese products to 54%, as per NBC.

Trump also added a 20% tax on products from the European Union, a 10% baseline tax on imports from all countries, 46% on Vietnam, and 32% on Taiwan. All in all, 180 countries were on the tariff list.

The new price hikes could be a painful transition for many Americans as middle-class essentials such as housing, autos, and clothing are expected to become more costly, while disrupting the alliances built to ensure peace and economic stability. The lack of faith has now transferred to the stock market, which has been in a tailspin since the announcement.

The S&P 500 was down 3.7% in afternoon trading, more than other major stock markets, and at its bottom in the morning was on track for its worst day since COVID struck in 2020. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 1,228 points, or 2.9%, as of 1:08 p.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 4.8% lower.

Everything from crude oil to Big Tech stocks to the value of the U.S. dollar against other currencies fell. Even gold, which has hit records recently as investors sought something safer to own, pulled lower.

Some of the worst hits walloped smaller U.S. companies, and the Russell 2000 index of smaller stocks dropped 5.5% to pull it more than 20% below its record.

Remember when the republicans were pro-business? Now what the hell do they represent? Tin foil hat psychos? Maybe they’ve tricked working class americans that they are somehow on their side but distracting them with the boogey man of illegal immigrants taking their jerbs but the reality is they’ll be getting laid off and paying more harder than ever. Education and R&D are being trashed, the things that businesses claim are crucial to progress and an educated workforce. Add on top of that no improvement in healthcare and now public health has been gutted and they’ve essentially been thrown into the gutter. They are so distracted by trivial political distractions though that they can’t even see how badly they are being shoved aside.

        It is with adblockers:

        • Pi-Hole (home-network-wide)
        • uBlock origin (AddIn for Firefox android)

I just tried it without and it is afwul. I had 5 popups (1 google login - why???, 2 newsletter, 1 video, 1 full page ad). Wtf.
