For me hearing songs I don’t like that much make me appreciate the music I like even more.

When I get in the car and Tupac starts rapping about how I am going to the grocery store, the bank, and the liquor store and narrating every little thing that happens along the way only to realize that he narrated my entire afternoon in song… I’ll know it’s time to stomp on my phone and snip my internet.

Here’s the thing I don’t think its even that, if it infinitely personalized to what I want then I wouldn’t have ever gone out of my comfort zone and discover other types of music I now like.

I would just be listening to infinite greenday like some sort of corpopunk purgatory.

Art is mlre than what’s comfortable to you.

That’s one reason I left radio. Music chosen by an algorithm, as far back as the 80s.

Other reasons too, but that’s another story.

I still listen to music in the old ways. Random recommendations from friends, artisanally pirated and served off of a dedicated MP3 player device with wired headphones.

There’s no way for AI music to sneak in.

Streaming services are going to be force feeding you this crap soon, it’s way cheaper for them and enough people will keep subscribing to make it profitable.

finally, being way too much on rym pays off. Ive never needed the algorithm, all playlists are my own and idgaf about apple musics suggested ones.

no but all jokes aside its a huge fucking problem. Good reccomendations are an invaluablr service in the musical community, and the fleeting time in which it was possible to use the algorithm meaningfully to find new music relating to your tastes was actually great. Which is ofcourse also exactly why its such a big problem when ai becomes auditorily (talking about artifacting here) indistinguishable from human made, AND that they show up alongside the human made without clear distinction.

If you really care, thinking about this sstuff always pays off. Personally in the process of getting my collection self hosted on jellyfin or something. Untill then, im keeping a sharp eye on the streaming shenanigans

but also also, CHECK OUT INTERNET RADIO. Discovered it like a year ago. Its like tapping into a world wide community of music nerds. Very early internet vibes

check out 16bit.fm B.T.M and I.D.E.A for some really tasty ravish electronics or Groove.fm from brazil for some immaculate chill vibes. The dj hasnt gotten the hang of it yet, some of the most insane transition ive heard in a while, but that just shows that theres an actual person in brazil rocking out and trying their best, and that just brightens my day every time.

Keep it real out there ✌️

AI is now admittedly pretty good at making perfectly passable music, but the whole point of music is it’s humanity. Music expresses emotion and feelings and connects the listener to the artist. It creates shared culture between fans.

AI music is interesting to me on a purely technical level and is more than acceptable background noise, but it’ll never be more than that.

I don’t want some infinite procedural music that will have no lasting effect past the first listen. No shared context between others. What’s the point?

passable doesn’t mean it’s any better than a literal placeholder of something that should’ve been done. there is an entire field of computer music and specifically algorithmic music that makes AI music sound like it’s not worth the hassle. Iannis Xenakis can fuck you up for real!

Not defending AI music, it can go and fuck itself no matter how neat of a trick it is. But let’s not pretend that world wasn’t already full of “placeholder” music from vacuous pop artists and some people who genuinely believed they had a personality.

I like new music, but first listen is always the hardest. music grows on me - rare is the song that i love at first listen.

Infinite personalized music would become the most boring ass shit ever. Because the system would continually just play what you like and what you like would become narrower and narrower and narrower until it’s just the same sound over and over and over again.

There would be no listening to a randomized playlist that would occasionally pop in some new music from a new artist and the sound pops in your brain and you go “wow this is really amazing” and you discover a new song and sound that excites your brain. Instead you would just slowly become mentally numb listening to your infinite personalized slop.

Also completely misses the entire idea of fucking culture. How do you get a taste in “what you like”? YOU LISTEN TO WHAT OTHERS SHOW YOU!!! That’s culture: SHARED experiences.

Goddamn. The kinds of people rooting for this idea where you only listen to what you like are definitely the same ones who think the best way to meet a date is through as app. The only surprising part is that the silent majority aren’t angry enough to break their apathy yet.

Absolutely. I dumped Spotify and the rest a couple years ago and went back to an mp3 player. Since leaving streamers I’ve discovered so much more music than I ever did with the algorithms. My old “safe” music I used to listen to seems boring by comparison.

Not only that but the entire social aspect of music is gone. It’s a wonderful experience to find a person who has similar taste in music to me. I can talk about it for hours. That disappears if everyone is fed a personalized feed of extremely tailored music. If things keep going the way they are Gen Z to the Baby Boomers really did have the best childhoods. We’re really making things worse for Gen Alpha on.

Please, would people start checking themselves. That or you better be at my bands next performance in the Starbucks parking lot by the mall. You say you love the art form but literal artist dying on the vine since the day I was born.

And if you dont care enough to support little Geoffrey’s funkadelic phase with his keyboard in the basement you don’t care about this.

I hope you fucking down vote me and get your ass out to the next music and arts festival but god knows you will only participate in the former.

welcome to a niche, I guess. I’m a part of quite a few of those. Turns out my wallet isn’t big enough to carry an industry. or my rent. Sorry bro.

Maybe in another timeline I’m a super rich dude and I can single-handedly support independent art financially.

And weird random computer generated music.

If youre arguing for diversity then you shouldn’t mind AI music.

If youre arguing for art to be restricted to human creators you should indiscriminately support it through government programs, local initiatives, and places of learning. Otherwise no one is incentivtized to do it.

If you’re arguing for diversity then you shouldn’t mind AI music.

well we come full circle back to the main topic and hit the paradox of tolerance. Someone trying to claim “Spotify, Apple Music, and Streaming in general is over” is not someone trying to embrace diversity and carve out a new road to potentially explore. They are stating an intent to conquer and extinguish.

I don’t have a problem with the concept of AI music, but I do with the kinds of people it seems to attract. So yeah, I can’t really support someone who simply sees art as an algorithm to “solve” and dismisses human made music as “obsolete”.

you should indiscriminately support it through government programs, local initiatives, and places of learning.

I do. But it’s not like I fund all art equally. I play a lot more video games than I listen t soundtracks, and I watch a lot more animation than I do plays. Art is diverse and you pick and choose what to consume or make for yourself.

That’s all I was saying when I said “I wouldn’t call myself a music guy”
