  • i think the incompetence comes into play from knowing the risk but proceeding for the memes. and like. look. respect to doing luthery as a form of stunt work. but all amateur stuntwork is ultimately a form of incompetence. it’s cool, and respectworthy. but it’s also not… the competent thing to do to see a magnet break a slat, realize it can break your finger, and then press on to do it.

  • Tolkein’s idyllic structure for a society, the shire, is frequently analyzed through a lens of “is this anarchism?” and it’s not all that uncommon to conclude “yes”

all these fuckers read Tolkien and adopted the imagery of the villains. none of them realize that the message is that all the top level people are addicted to power. the people who actually get shit done, the hobbits, they are tempted by power because it’s tempting, but ultimately value singing songs, making tea, and eating potatoes too much to want to possess the ultimate power in the universe. almost everyone who comes into contact with the one ring wants to possess it forever. Bilbo’s first desire for it is to use it to help him escape a dangerous situation. Frodo is indifferent to it at first. Sam immediately hates it, feels guilt for letting Frodo carry it alone, and commits himself to destroying it.

You’re not supposed to read Tolkien and implement fascism. you’re supposed to read Tolkien and learn to value pacifism

  • that will never be on the ballot. the active socialist position is to vote for the least worst candidate with a chance of winning and organize on the margins to build the strength for a robust insurgency movement that can break the system and make a new one. organizing under hyperfascism is much more difficult than under neoliberal fascism. it’s why big businesses switch to supporting overt fascism in times of decay. yes, the calculus is a little different if you’re in a winner take all location with a heavy majority like maryland, illinois, or idaho. in those locations, go ahead, vote 3rd party to send a message that america isn’t homogenous or a binary. or spend your day organizing on the margins. but you have to understand that the most votes a third party candidate ever mustered was 18%, and that candidate was a right wing libertarian with some very concerning views on race.

election day is all about finding a way to make the other 364 days of resistance continue to be possible. they’ve become much more difficult under the republican controlled apparatus
