That’s not true. The first exemption from AI on religious grounds was a Unitarian universalist (another secular, values based religious organization), back in June.

If I were to join any organized religion, it would be that one. But in my free time I avoid anything organized.
I’ve never thought of humanism as a religion (and still don’t, frankly) but fuck yeah.
Religions have organized meeting places & are legally recognized as religions for tax exempt status. Humanism is a philosophical stance but not an organized religion.
humanism appears to be a branch of darwinawardism
What part of humanist philosophy makes you say that?
the human part
At least humans exist.
Can’t argue that they exist, they are the numbnuts behind ai, nuclear weapons, and burning fossil fuel for fun and profit.
And just like that I wasn’t an atheist.
As an ordained Dudeist minister, we keep it real, man. Doesn’t mean we have to abide the bullshit machines, though.
You can be a Humanist as well as an Atheist don’t worry pal.
Sweet! It’s probably obvious I didn’t read the article haha I was just making a joke. But I will do some reading on Humanism now - thank you!
I can highly recommend the book “Humanly Possible: 700 years of humanist freethinking, inquiry, and hope” by Sarah Bakewell if you wanted a nice overview; although it’s a lot of content it’s also quite light and you can dip in and out :)
I’ll check it out! Thank you!
Freedom from religion is more important than freedom of religion.
Atheism is just an ideological position on deities., so you can be one and still have a religion. The article specifically notes his religion as Humanism, but he could be Buddhist, Taoist, any philosophical religion. I dunno if pantheism or Satanism would count, but don’t see why not; they’re both a hoot with very positive values.
Using AI should not be mandatory to begin with.
I’m a Butlarian, myself.
The jokes about starting some random religion aside, it really isn’t that far fetched that being steadfastly anti AI includes enough values and beliefs about the world to form some sort of religion. Maybe weak on metaphysical beliefs, but again, leaning a bit more in that direction from an anti AI position seems pretty natural.
Humanism, naturalism and whatever you want to call it, if averting from the tech industry’s latest “progress” is non-secular, then let that be a religion.
Hallelujah
A traumatic brain injury is usually a disqualifying factor for work dependent on intellectual competency.
Did I hear an Amen?
Well that’s dumb. Not because we should welcome AI, but because AI is a program that runs numbers from one end of a model to the other. It looks like it is “thinking”, but it is not. Input the same token and you will get the exact same set of other tokens as an output every single time. We just perceive thinking because AIs use randomness to select which of the output tokens to feed back into the next iteration of the same process. So if religion is an excuse not to use it, then this person has no place using a computer at all.
All the more reason not to allow it to think for us.
Like I said, it’s not thinking. There is no thought going on with AI.
Right, we agree. It shouldn’t be thinking for us since it can’t think.
