On the playground, the other kids used to tear down the show-boaters. There were no parents around and lessons would be learned and the game went on. Parents/adults really screw everything up with their constant interference.

It’s a non-competitive league with specific rules about sharing and playing together. My kid played I-9 for flag football for a while and then we went over to a competitive league as he got better, and wanted to actually compete. I-9 is explicitly for just getting kids out to play.

Other parents complained because this kid should clearly be in a competitive league instead, and the other story I read was that the dad was filming for tik tok and loudly going on about how famous his kid was online. Other parents were fed up with the stunt and complained about it and the parent filming their kids to put online, so the league refunded the parents and asked them to take the kid to a different league if he wanted to play competitively. The parents then started losing it and arguing about it and causing a scene.

They didn’t call the cops on a black kid for being too good at soccer. They called the cops on his parents for orchestrating a stupid tik tok stunt and being assholes to all the other families there just to get their kids outside doing something as a team, and not leaving when asked.

If you want your kid to play competitively, go to a competitive league. There’s thousands out there. If you want to go have your kid dunk on non-competitive kids and ruin their fun, don’t be surprised when you get asked to leave, and don’t start throwing a little bitch fit when that happens.

Having watched the video, I can see how the other parents would’ve been frustrated. The kid was truly kicking ass and the dad was being obnoxious about it (also, apparently the kid was 3 and the rest of the kids were 5?).

However, calling the cops on a black family for trespassing still seems extreme and unnecessarily endangering imo. People have been killed for less.

Some people exist in a world where every boundary is a fence that needs to be tested. They’re obnoxious and irritating to every person they meet that doesn’t see the world that way. It would never have made the news if when asked to join a competitive league, which most parents would see as a compliment, they simply did so. He could blast off on tiktok about it all he wanted and probably gotten the sympathetic ears he so clearly craves. But they caused a scene instead.

I have the great misfortune of working with a number of people like this. They cannot be reasoned with. They cannot be talked down. If you tell them something is a certain way and that can’t be changed, and they don’t like that answer, they will continue to cause a scene about it until something else grabs their attention. They are a problem. They seek to be a problem. That is their goal. Being a problem gets them what they want. To be very clear, they are frequently consciously aware that they are a nuisance, and occasionally even aware that they’re wrong. That does not matter.

The coach isn’t there to deal with parents, he’s there to help the kids. There isn’t anyone there to deal with parents. The coach has a responsibility to see to the kids and ensure the other parents are happy with the service. The coach is left with little other recourse.

Hence why club league systems exists in the rest of the world. Kid signs up to a club and gets assigned to a team that plays in a league that suits them. Bottom kids leagues are just for fun where winning and losing doesn’t really matter. If a kid is good and wants to play competitively they automatically get moved to a different team that plays in a higher league. So there is no need to kick a kid out of a football club.

Yeah that was intentional on their part.

Here’s I-9s about page. They explicitly are against this kind of shit in the first place. Parents are supposed to stay out of it because the entire point is providing a fun inclusive environment to get kids out there playing, without the pressure from overbearing parents and coaches. And at least for flag football, they didn’t even keep scores in the first place so there was no point in running up goals.

          https://www.i9sports.com/how-we-differ

Everything they were doing was against the rules and purpose of the league. So naturally they were asked to leave. If your kid is so great and the next Ronaldo, go put them in a competitive league. But then they probably wouldn’t be dominating like they were and you wouldn’t have content for your stupid TikTok.

I mean, those details are in this very article too… the rest of the article is just written with a heavy slant.

The family states that the league banned them from the field via a trespass notice and that officers then escorted them away in front of the other children. They say they later received a refund for the 2026 fall soccer league registration. The original video notes that the game was being live-streamed on TikTok, so other viewers saw the sequence in real time.

          And

Nevada has previously drawn attention online for skill clips and goal highlights posted by the same account, with some videos circulating on accounts such as House of Highlights and ESPN FC. Family posts describe a pattern of the 3-year-old excelling against older children in the league, which they say prompted repeated complaints about fairness.

And here’s I-9s page about what their intent is. I know their goal because my kids have played in their league lol. I’ve coached in their league when my kids were little.

          https://www.i9sports.com/how-we-differ

Their entire purpose is to not be a competitive league and to just give kids an organized place to play and work on teamwork and building basic sports skills. They do not want hyper competitive kids there and will ask you to take your kid to a competitive league, which this article even touched on this family getting multiple complaints. They don’t want parents inserting themselves into the games. They don’t even keep score (at least they didn’t when my kids played for them).

The league asked the parents to leave, they didn’t, the league gave them a trespass notice and the police enforced that, and the family was refunded their league costs. This article even talks about how the parents have made multiple social media posts with videos of him doing this with him going viral online.

Nobody called the cops on a 3 year old for being too good at soccer.

These shitheads put their son in a league intentionally designed to be equal playing time and non-competitive, had him out there beating up on other kids so they could video it and get him viral. Nobody gives a shit about the kid being “too good” at soccer. The whole thing is that the kid should be in a competitively league instead of his parents having him break every rule in the league so that they can put out highlight reels of him on social media.

A lot of that is directly mentioned in this article, just glossed over or spun. And I know I-9 from personal experience with my kids and coaching for them in the league. There’s always some parent that thinks their kid is the next superstar but is too cheap to put them in the more expensive competitive league.

The incident, captured in video the family posted to TikTok under the handle nevadaney10 and later shared widely, shows the child — identified by his parents as Nevada — playing in a league with kids roughly two years older.

          And

The family states that the league banned them from the field via a trespass notice and that officers then escorted them away in front of the other children. They say they later received a refund for the 2026 fall soccer league registration. https://www.i9sports.com/how-we-differ

Families seeking a highly competitive format with a win-at-all-cost culture will not feel at home in our leagues. Our format is unabashedly recreational as we reclaim youth sports for the millions of kids across the nation who just want to play sports as they should be… fun. That’s the i9 Sports®difference.

Its kinda funny how they hit the details while spinning them to be something else.

Even the article trying to rile people up says they were streaming to TikTok, had previously posted videos of him dominating other kids in the league, and were asked to leave by league officials.

The only thing that says the police were called on the kid is the annoying dad live streaming to tik tok saying “they really called the police on a three year old for being too good”. Like no dumbass, they called the police on YOU for being an asshole.

I played soccer at that age, my siblings did too, and my cousins do as well.

When you’re 3/4/5 you’re not playing soccer. There are no rules, positions, score, winner/loser or goalies. It’s “go kick the ball around time”. When the ball goes out of bounds the coaches, who are often just some dad, just give it to a player that has not had a ball in a while. No one is trying to win, there is no ‘win’, it’s all make believe for the kids to have a chance to run around for a while in the sun. If one super-player wins every match, that sucks for every other player on the field including his team since they don’t even get to “win”, there are no winners. They just have to sit around bored with the other team because there is no point.

So the league refunded the parents fee and asked them to not come back (trespassed them). They are no longer legally allowed on the field and for that matter, have no claim to participate in the league seeing as they were refunded. They weren’t kicked out on the basis of race, it was many parents complaining “Hey, I paid ~$600 for ‘go kick the ball around time’, and you are facilitating a situation where my kid doesn’t get to kick the ball”. This isn’t a competitive format it’s gym hour and they are not receiving the product they paid for.

A 3 yearold hogging the ball all game, isn’t doing anything wrong. He’s 3. He’s should be instructed to share more but he isn’t doing something that warrants the cops involvement. The parents however, that understand the situation and failed to correct it / their kids ability to share, do. The adults that received their money back, understand it. The adults that received a trespass notice, understand it. The adults, who the cops talked to not the kid, understand it. The parents of the superplayers here at being assholes and injecting their kid in a situation they already KNOW will cause problems. All the kids are just being kids and the other parents, as far as I can tell, just want their kid to receive the product they paid for.

Too many people in this thread letting their emotions control their opinion due to a scary headline about a subject they apparently know very little about.

If it was a matter and refunding and asking people to leave why was police involved? I can think of 100 ways to handle this without police starting with giving the other kids another ball.

There has been an update. As far as the reason for the call:

A league official told officers that parents were upset about their son’s playing time and that the child would no longer be allowed to participate in the league.

Another entry states that the parents were upset because they believed their child was being criticized for playing too well and was being taken out of the game.

So it sounds like the coach benched the kid at some point, maybe to give the other kids some time to kick the ball, and the parents argued with the coach about it, which led to them being refunded and asked to leave, which they refused to do until after police got there.

In a statement released Monday, the department said a league official requested police assistance with a disturbance between league officials and the parents.

The league had asked the family to leave and offered to refund its fees, according to the statement. After officers arrived, a league official asked them to speak with the family because he did not want to prolong the disturbance, police said.

The family told officers the game was over and they were leaving. Police described the family as cooperative and said officers provided an event number at the family’s request.

The department characterized the incident as a civil matter, not a criminal one. “No one was arrested, trespassed, or forced to leave the park,” the department said.

All the article says is “i9 Sports, which operates youth leagues, camps, and clinics for children ages 3 and up in sports including soccer, has not issued a public statement on the incident. Local police have also not released information confirming details of any call or escort.”

What you’re describing is not just some more reasonable interpretation of the info in the article. You’re describing facts other people have no way of knowing. It’s not “letting emotions control their opinion”. It’s simply having opinion about facts at hand.

Can’t speak for your jurisdiction, but around here, and most of America I think, if a private business tells you to leave and you don’t, that’s trespass. In Florida it’s trespass if you ignore certain property signage. The police don’t “issue” a trespass, it’s automatic.

The fact is the police were called and legal action was taken. Now that it has been escalated to involve the power of state force, that invites a challenge to the charge based on equal accommodations laws.

Considering the state of the society is such that John Oliver’s most recent LWT segment is about neo-nazi entrenchment in the party in power, we can’t look at this incident and not see a racism mattar. We have to consider if the response of the other parents to invoke law enforcement would have occurred if the color of the offending family was a few shades lighter.

It’s always good to check; reportedly, the team is already quite diverse, and black parents were among those filing complaints.

The father had been coaching the child who turned out to be quite skilled, and had enrolled him in a very beginner rec league. He got his viral videos out there and started tagging teams and schools. He got the publicity he was looking for, and the facility had him removed and issued a refund because the child’s advanced training and subsequent skill level/play were inappropriate for their beginner rec league.

. We have to consider if the response of the other parents to invoke law enforcement would have occurred if the color of the offending family was a few shades lighter.

This is not substianted, you can review the videos posted by the father and see the makeup of the team was not primarily white. No other kids were removed from the team.

I did add context that one of the primary political parties — the one in power, in fact — is openly white supremacist and xenophobic. Hate crimes surged in 2016 by 68% and haven’t dropped since. Literal lynchings in the US have become conspicuously more frequent.

Even before Trump, police and the justice system have been demonstrably dangerous to black Americans.

          So, yes?

Maybe if we wanted to take interracial tolerance in the US for granted, we shouldn’t have voted a white supremacist into office, which Americans did twice, specifically for his racist and white supremacist views. Maybe the response to Brianna Taylor and Heorge Floyd should have followed through on police reform.

I’m not claiming racism doesn’t exist, or doesn’t exist in America, or that the police force isn’t often racist (intentionally or otherwise).

My claim is after looking into all the details of the situation, it’s the unfortunate reality that the kid WAS literally just too good. It’s funny to say but it’s the actual fact. He was too good, and didn’t belong. On top of that the parents were being problematic which is the real reason the cops were called. If the parents just chilled and acted like reasonable adults then nothing would have happened.

A blanket perspective of “A bad thing happened to a non-white person, therefor, the bad thing happened because they are non-white” is barley better than the full throated maga racists and it infantilizes and removes autonomy of non-white people. Sometimes the reality is that non-white people DO deserve the cops called on them. It’s not the case that the police involvement is ALWAYS racist.

They called the police in a situation where the need for police is implausible. There were parents there, yes? I assume they were sober. Why didn’t they manage the situation as might mature adults?

No, they escalated to state intervention, and that means question of equal accommodations can be raised, if the state has laws mandating them.

But it also raises the question of racism, especially if that was the only black family in the group.

Racism doesn’t merely exist in the US, it’s the dominant culture right now. So yes, it’s entirely appropriate to expect it and catalog when it happens.

Not fucking $600 I’m not. That’s a car payment. My friends and I were always able to make do with sticks or fence posts or whatever and organize games. That was before we even had cell phones. You don’t even need organized teams and uniforms for a bunch of little children to just fuck around.

I just looked it up and soccer is $157 and covers 6 weeks. So about $26 a week that covers the organization, setting up practice, the games, the refs, etc.

                That’s pretty cheap.

Too many people in this thread letting their emotions control their opinion due to a scary headline about a subject they apparently know very little about.

This is my Lemmy experience in a nutshell. I really wanted this to be a good reddit alternative, but it seems kinda like maga for the left. Which obviously is better than maga, but still exhausting.

Living in a society sometimes means suffering opinions and attitudes you don’t like. I know I don’t always agree with the Lemmy consensus.

I don’t think the notions of respecting equal accommodations, and approaching potentially racist situations with an abundance of caution — especially considering the current party in power — is radically left, id est MAGA for the left.

The episode has prompted online discussion about age-group rules, competitive balance in recreational youth leagues

Looks like some people are trying to defend this by arguing that kids are there to just have fun, not being outplayed. Which still completely ignores the fact, the the 3yo also was just having fun.

I’ve been going to my sister’s kids’ games since they started and there’s ALWAYS a huge skill disparity in the younger games. And honestly it’s just one thing that seems to click and instantly make twice as good: predicting where the ball will go.

Kids that age ball chase because they have no idea what’s going to happen next. They will literally stop and wait for an opposing player to make their move before deciding what to do.

It’s exceedingly frustrating to watch but also really funny to see a whole field pause to watch a player do some tippy taps before kicking the ball straight into the feet of another.

Under 5 years old, an age difference of 2+ months can already be a major advantage in any sport that requires coordination, dexterity, anticipation, and agility without even considering raw talent. There’s a documented phenomenon where leagues that start splitting kids into skill levels at a young age are split predominantly based on the proximity of the month the kids were born to the age cutoff. Being older is already a massive advantage around then because their brains and bodies are developing rapidly and a few extra months of development has a lot of effect on their cognitive and physical abilities, and their height and weight.

This kid may be an outlier in raw skill. But honestly that also may even out considerably as other kids’ motor skills develop. This shit is temporary and part of playing sports in this age range. All of the people involved need to just chill out and watch the kids play whether they are killing it or chasing the ball.

That’s true about age differences being much more significant when they’re young. And I remember reading about the disproportionate amount of January and February birthdays in hockey leagues of the 90s/2000s so that other part tracks, too.

We’re on the same page about the rest. And (aside from foot coordination) it’s not a steady skill increase, it happens in big steps as ideas click for them. The worst player in the team can become the best overnight at that age lol

Obviously this looks awful on its face, but we definitely don’t know all the details leading up to them getting a criminal trespass notice. Having an 8 year old who plays recreational soccer, I can confidently tell you I would have a serious problem with another parent live streaming his games on Tik Tok. Dad says “there’s thousands of people watching this, he’s famous.” This seems likely to be against the rules at most soccer clubs, and it’s definitely a privacy violation.

Edit: Update indicates what likely happened was the coach benches the kid to give the other kids a turn, the parents complained to the coach about this (maybe because it was bad for their live stream) which ended in them being refunded their money and asked to leave, but they didn’t leave, so police were called.

Okay, then why is the viral video of them kicking this kid out of the league and having him escorted out with police instead of a video of the coach having a conversation with the father about live streaming the games?

Because if that was the issue, then that should have been the conversation. Not “your kid is too good we’re going to kick him out of the league because he’s making the white kids feel bad about themselves.”

Selective editing. That conversation could have already occurred and the parents refused and were trespassed. They knew the rage bait of having a cop come and kick them out would get views so that’s the only thing they published. I will never trust influencers, especially one’s who involve their own children. They are almost always complete scum of the earth.

Neither you nor I know what conversations the league had with the parents or how many times, because the parents here did not share that. The league has not shared any information on what happened, and rightfully so, though I’m sure they will now that it’s hit the news. I’m just cautioning against automatically jumping to the worst conclusion on very little info, and also sharing that I’d have a serious problem with this parent live-streaming my son on Tik Tok.

Edit: Body cam footage was released:

Upon arrival, police met with someone from the soccer league who made the call to police requesting that the family be asked to leave the area in which the soccer games were being played.

[H]e said the 3-year-old was allegedly pushing other players, so he told the child and the parents that no pushing was allowed.

The man said the child’s parents became irritated and caused a “big scene, arguing with the other parents,” according to the body-camera video.

“I just want them out, immediately,” he said.

Police said that because the games were being played in a public park, they could not be forced to leave, but that they would meet with the family to figure out what was going on.

The league official said that the mother was live-streaming their interactions, and that’s why he walked away from the family. The officers made their way to the other side of the field where the family was.

When officers made contact with the family, the mother said they were just confused and didn’t understand why her child was being removed from the soccer games and why they were being asked to leave the park.

They trespassed the kid, so the police had no choice but to escort him out. Which absolutely is a waste of police resources, but is also perfectly legal and follows the process.

In more reasonable countries, nobody can trespass you from a football field, unless you give them a very good reason like repeated physical assault.

How would they have the authority to file a trespass in a league game? It would have to be a league representative, wouldn’t it?

Otherwise parents in that league should just file trespasses against the opposing team to get a win every match.

A lot of white people are.

The Karens will always do Karen shit.

The police could have used common sense but elected not to.

You expect police to not needlessly use their power? This is a country were SWATing is so easy there is a term for it and so common that it doesn’t get investigated.

The article makes it (slightly) less bad. 3 year old was kicked out of a 5 year old league for being too good and ruining competitive balance. The kid’s parents took it badly and would not leave until police intervened.

Most team sports don’t ban star players

Although i have seen a show called Ted Lasso where the coach put him on the bench for hogging the ball.

The article says multiple substitutions. Wonder what the coach’s role was in the whole thing.

Most youth leagues dont do substitutions like pros do, they swap out every quarter or so. The goal is to have the kids play about equally, or else parents lose their shit that their kid sat on the bench the whole game.

It’s a toddler fun league. The league has specific rules about it not being competitive and sharing play time.

The kids parents are wannabe influencers filming everything for TikTok.

Nobody called the cops on a kid for being too good. They called the cops on the parents because they were asked to leave over their stupid social media stunts, and then they refused.

The ‘coach’ is probably a volunteer (or more likely a voluntold) with no training or authority if it is anything like what goes on around me. Where I am, they’d be lucky if the coach has played soccer before.
