A group of ill-prepared climbers had to be rescued because Gemini told them climbing Mt. Shasta would only take 8 hours.
Wat? WHAT? Ive not climbed anything close to shasta, we dont even have peaks that high where i live but im much much more responsible when planning. Who even goes “uhh yeah 6 hours sounds about right” to a peak above 4k??? I mean sure i can climb 4000 meters elevation in 6 hours, thats about my pace but you also have to get down and i imagine those are not easy trails. All if this is so stupid especially since they were climbers cause tou are not just climbing that high randomly, youd give up much faster but that means these idiots climbed stuff successfully before which is insane.
It took them 16 hours just to reach the summit. That was already 7PM on August 30, way past the recommended turnaround time of 12PM
Not sure what kind of “climbers” they are, but I would have known a long time before then that their plans were going off the rails.
Darwin always wins
How many drugs over what time-frame does one have to take to think this would be a good idea?
I despair at humanity.Don’t even rely on it to plan inconsequential stuff, like an appliance purchase. It’ll hallucinate all kinds of crazy features it doesn’t have. I tried to use it to compare dishwasher models when I needed a new one. What a cluster fuck of wrong information and wasted time that was.
AI bros should do that more. If they do natural selection will kick in and take care of the problem for us.
The article doesn’t mention it, but I sure hope they were billed for the rescue.
In my European country, mountain rescue is billed thousands of euro and it’s not free, if it was due to stupidity
I can’t imagine a 20 hour search+rescue being free in the land of the Free
This is actually an area that America is generally pretty good at i.e. rescues by the US Park Service are generally free, unless there’s obvious gross intelligence.
Personally, I would consider using AI to plan a trip for multiple people as gross negligence, but considering this current government’s position on AI, I suspect they weren’t charged a penny for it.
No, bad taxpayer! Bad!
PSA: Don’t rely on AI
to plan anything that could put your life at risk… like a mountain climb - EngadgetThe slop did not account for the slope
(sorry)
Slippery slop
Sloppery slope
Honestly I hate AI with a burning passion. It’s the stupidest shit on earth. Except for these climbers.
Because it’s their own fucking fault. I don’t even think we can blame AI for this one.
People dying because they blindly followed the advice of an LLM is kind of like natural selection.
I assume the selection will become more rapid as the consequences of cognitive offloading begin to manifest.
Agreed. Honestly should let it happen. People that stupid will hurt us as a species.
Stupid humans tend to be the reason for a lot of the issues plaguing the planet.
well… Google is on board with this usage

Good. Hopefully he dies out there because of it. He won’t, because it’s staged as hell but a man can dream.
- “Hey Google is this edible?” [showing an out of focus, blurry image]
- “This is definitely edible, you can feast on that”
- “It is bitter, are you sure about that?”
- “Yes, it’s definitely edible, you can eat that”
- “I am dizzy, and by comparing pictures on a book it seems to be poisonous???”
- “You’re absolutely right! I accidentally confused that for another root. I will take note to do better next time”
[dies]
that is the result of listening to corporations
Wow this seems an jncredibly stupid show, and teenage viewers will believe it works as shown and not staged
Exactly, this is sooooo dangerous for the mentally damaged people that follow MrBeast
