New Discord clone (“Harmony”) with a suspiciously AI-looking website, a single contributor, and blistering development = AI. Took me a minute to find it but it looks like they were scrubbed from a few places ~3 weeks ago.

Well Stoat has been in development limbo for the last decade and has no plans for federation.
It looks like recently they finally sifted through a lot of governance and dev team issues, we now have screenshare and a much better client
Dunno about federation, but people have been self-hosting for a long time
I guess that’s a fair point, Matrix is also an option if federation is important.
Matrix is a terrible, buggy option, sure. And with Fluxer being similarly open source and federated we may run into similar problems down the road.
Can you elaborate? It’s nowhere near perfect but it works well enough to daily drive in my opinion.
I mean the list is long. Login issues, random decryption issues, it’s incredibly slow, everyone is using a different software so things that work on one instance don’t appear on others. It’s a shitshow.
Aside from decryption issues I haven’t really experienced any of the others. I think having different clients and homeservers is actually a good thing. Imagine if Lemmy only had one client, the website, then I most likely wouldn’t even be using Lemmy/PieFed.
I’m not entirely sure what you’re referring to when you say “things”, I’ve been using Cinny for quite some time and haven’t had many issues with it. Most of these projects don’t have (proper) funding so naturally it develops more slowly than platforms with monetisation like Fluxer. It’s worth considering donating or contributing in other ways if you wish to see your favourite client or the protocol improve.
Obviously decentralization is good. But it does lead to a lot of problems as well where everyone isn’t on the same page.
What “proper” monetization do you think Fluxer has that these other platforms don’t?
Why would I contribute to 20 year old projects in the hopes of improvement when Fluxer is already everything I want?
They use the same business model as Discord, it’s freemium software: https://fluxer.app/plutonium.
But you do you.
You get all of those features for free when you self-host.
