The reason I tip at sit down places or delivery isn’t because the work the server is doing is so difficult. Its because they’re allowed to legally be paid next to nothing due to the expectation of tips. I have close friends who work in that industry who wouldn’t get by if not for tips. We should abolish the idea of tipping as an excuse to lower wages, its ridiculous.

The real question is why restaurants in America are allowed to even do that… Pay them like everybody else and do away with tips. No other business is allowed to subsidize wages like that.

Oh no, just general classism. While the US has its share of misogyny, of course, rape culture being the forefront, it’s actually not that bad compared to the average first-world country in that regard, and almost all misogynistic views in the united states are exclusively in service to capital owners control over society. This includes abortion, the wage gap, and the entirety of the beauty industry.

Pink capitalism is a huge part of American society, and is the only reason women have any rights, given it is slightly more profitable on average to let women earn their own money to spend on capitalism, instead of solely acting as support and production of human capital.

Are you in the US? If so, many states allow servers and bartenders to be paid less than min wage… $2.13/hr in some states currently, which is the same rate I was paid 37 yrs ago when I was a waiter. While most states now require the wages + tips have to meet or exceed min wage with the employer making up the difference, $7.25 isn’t enough for anyone to get by these days and if employers have to make up the difference, they’ll fire the employee because they assume they suck if they’re aren’t getting tips

In Canada, the minimum wage for servers, bus boys, bar people, is all below the regular minimum wage because it takes into account the fact they make tips and it’s expected. That’s why I tip those people. Because it’s literally part of their salary.

They are guaranteed minimum wage if they don’t make that with tips. They aren’t salaried as per regular employees, you’re choosing to subsidize. It is a social norm, but lets call it what it is.

The regular minimum wage in Québec is 16.60$/h

The minimum wage for someone making tips is 13.30$/h

            Those include:

            • Restaurateurs - except fast food where you order and pay at a counter where you receive the food.
            • Food deliveries, like when you order at a restaurant and ask for it to be delivered
            • Where alcoholic drinks are served, like bars or at events
            • Hotel staff like cleaning and maintenance.

These people need tips for their wage to be equal or above the regular minimum wage. You’re supposed to tip them. Otherwise you’re an obstacle to them earning their living wage. Unless the service you received was bad.

Now I understand that if tipping was not mandatory, like everywhere else in the world, it would definitely be better. I agree that tipping should be abolished. But that’s not the case right now. So in support for your fellow worker, you should tip at least the ones mentioned above if you are in Canada, or Québec at least.

Kidding aside, if you’re using these kiosks at a restaurant, cafe, or whatever, pay attention to the confirmation screen and make sure that you weren’t upcharged for deciding not to tip. There’s been social media content about prices being changed automatically in cart when you forego the tip screen.

There should be an alert when this happens but I’m sure we all know that won’t necessarily be the case, as these people lack scruples.

Another note regarding these kiosks. The establishments who use them do get reporting around people who proceed to the checkout screen and then abandon the transaction, so if you hate them and have 30 seconds for soft sabotage, it’s not the worst idea to initiate and abandon a transaction for the greater good.

Everyone should always double check the total before paying for anything. That said, the Shake Shack case does seem like an influencer was deliberately making misleading rage bait content.

I guess Shake Shack has an up-charge on late night orders (which, seems like a lame policy but maybe, hopefully it at least goes towards better wages for the late shift workers). The person in the video timed it to start before the late night surcharge time but then finish after that time so it looked like it was a charge for not tipping when all transactions starting before 11pm and finishing after 11pm get the same sudden up-charge.

Basing the charge off of when the transaction ends seems like terrible UX, so I’m not team Shake Shack (also, is it just me or is their food wildly overrated?). Like if I was getting an egg mcmuffin at 10:59 and took too long to dig out my credit card and at 11am it said “no eggmcmuffin, lunch only!” I think I would have a melt down. Not that I really ever eat at SS or McD

Just saying, you made it out like this has happened multiple times without any warning to the user that the price was changing – which just isn’t true.

This kinda shit only works because there are enough dumb people who do it. Same with how streaming providers can get away with enshittifying their services and rasing their prices. Or why lootboxes in video games are so prevalent. And many other things in life. A big chunk of people are akin to mindless NPCs that just do whatever their programmers (=billionaires) tell them to. NOT consuming is simply not an option to them. Like cancelling their streaming subscription because it got enshittified the the tenth time this year. No they just keep going. It always takes two to tango.

The human mind is predisposed to convenience and habit. The capitalist economy exploits this to no end. The owning-class does everything in their power to ensure that no alternatives exist without requiring massive hoops to jump through first before they can be accessible, making their option the fastest and most convenient option, even if it isn’t the most efficient or effective option.

Most people would rather sit and suffer because it is “easier” than take the risks or put in the effort involved to do better.

3 things that are bullshit about the prevalence of these tip requests.

    1. Tips are for service above and beyond the bare minimum. Taking my money in exchange for a good that I picked out and brought to the register is not a tippable service. Cooking my food at a restaurant is not a tippable service, it is literally the definition of the bare minimum. You should not be asking for a tip. And it is insulting that you do.

    2. It is often entirely unclear who would even receive these phantom tips were I do give one. Who gets it? The cashier? The cook? The one stocking the shelves? Everyone split evenly? The owner? Why would I give a tip generally to the business? If it isn’t directly tied to a person who provided the service, what is the tip even for?

    3. Since when is the MINIMUM expected tip 18 fucking percent? I have worked as a server (20 years ago). I was expected to report a 10% minimum of my sales in tips. 15% has ALWAYS been the standard expectation for service. Now the card readers are expecting 18-25% even as prices have shot up. What the fuck is with that?!

You’re right, fucking racist did it to pay ex slaves, and the slaves were not “legally” (read as racists didn’t want to) hire them, because of course they didn’t. Tipping was the beggar system that the racists created too make sure you know if you get uppity and your megar income is gone…

I remember hearing in my childhood that 15% was the standard, but by the time I was a teen (around 20 years ago now) and was actually paying for some things myself, I feel like 20% had pretty much become the standard around me.

Also, around 15ish years ago I was a pizza guy in the days before Uber eats and such really took off. I feel like tipping was pretty wonky for delivery people back then. It seemed like I often got a bit over tipped on small orders, and under tipped on bigger orders.

I feel like a lot of smaller, $20ish dollar orders would give me about a $5 tip (so about 25%) and then bigger $100+ orders would give me like $10 (so like 10% )

Tipping requests have gotten out of control, but the percent has gone up because inflation happened. Costs have risen in the last 20 years and not at the same rate across the board. The increase in base prices for restaurant food has not changed fast enough for 10% of it to still be a livable wage. I don’t love it either, but if I can’t afford 20% at a place then I don’t go there.

We should do away with tipped wage, and we should increase the minimum wage, but being shocked that wages have changed over 20 years is not a tipping issue.

Tipping requests have gotten out of control, but the percent has gone up because inflation happened.

That makes no sense. Inflation also increases the price of the goods and services. Tipping the same percentage means it scales with that inflation 1:1. The only way that would make sense is if, say, food had been somewhat resistant to inflationary pressures, but the restaurant owner wanted to make sure that their personnel were getting paid more to cover other costs of living that were affected more by inflation. But that is not the case. This new standard is across the board on every card reader for every business type I have seen. Restaurant, gas stations, mechanics, electronics, etc. That isn’t how this works.

          I addressed that already:

not at the same rate across the board. The increase in base prices for restaurant food has not changed fast enough for 10% of it to still be a livable wage.

Cursury searches result in the following: The rate of inflation for housing (6-7% yoy) and education (4-7% yoy depending on institution type) have increased dramatically in comparison to food (3% yoy) over the past 10 years.

It seems like restaurant inflation has been about double food inflation (though a lot of that is weighted towards the low and high end restaurants with McDs having increased more than most middle class restaurants for example), so that would still lag behind housing which makes up increasingly large portions of middle-low earner income. I am surprised that it’s so close honestly, but overall expenses have risen more than just inflation would lead you to believe. Admittedly the data was harder to find going back 20 years, so i took the easy route and went with 10. It’s very possible that the data 20-10 years ago really skews things one way or another. I stand by the initial statement that inflation was not consistent and that means that the % should change, but would probably need more time to sit down with the numbers to definitively say what exactly % makes most sense.

I again agree that the propagation of tipping on POS is a plague, but that’s a separate issue to the acceptable tipping percent.

I’d love to see the stats on that. Restaurant food seemed to shoot up among the fastest. I don’t think the CPI is tgat granular.

I did some extremely cursury searching and back of the napkin math. The short of it is that restaurant food outpaced inflation, but not all sectors. Doubling to 20% from 10% over 20 years may indeed be overdoing it, but I believe 10% would not be sufficient. The biggest contributor is probably housing in my opinion, but again I didn’t actually do too much digging. Clicked around and annualized averages from sources, but it wasn’t rigorous. If someone wants to actually do the math I’d be really keen to see it.

If I had to take a stab in the dark 15% would probably be a good minimum. If I say $20 is the minimum I find acceptable to be a part of and 2.13 is their minimum wage then they need to be making 17.87 an hour from just tips. If we make some assumptions of an 8 hr shift and 15 tables a shift (not how it works but I needed to make some assumptions), that’s $9.5+ a table needed. That would be fine for an average of 15%+ tip for an average of $60 a table, where realistically it’s probably going to be more per table on average. Someone can sanity check because that was a bit to keep in my head.

I haven’t read it (gotta go to bed). But my local gas station is asking for tips. If this is a thing, they can bite my balls. Ffs.
