Look, I get it. I don’t like AI when it takes the jobs of people. But if a small-time YT creator uses it for a thumbnail it’s not the end of the world.

That’s so true!!! There is this other channel even smaller yes they have the script also written by ai but it’s not the end of the world. There is this yt creator that is even smaller who is using ai voice. Not the end of the world. There is this yt creator who automated the whole process. Don’t get me wrong I don’t like ai to take jobs but I’m this case!/s

Stupid people will always take a valid principle and push It too far refusing to see what good can be out there.

AI is a tool and it’s here to stay. The sooner we learn to cope, regulate and use it ethically the better. And shutting down any use of AI is just stupid.

Let’s unpack that. “AI is here to stay” is a prediction, not an ethical argument. Wanting artistic jobs to remain human isn’t the same as opposing every use of technology.

Art isn’t merely a content-delivery pipeline. The artist is part of the point. If your “ethical use” involves treating human creativity as an inefficiency to eliminate, your human-centered framework may require further optimization.

Ultimately, calling people stupid is not a substitute for engaging with their argument. It’s simply an underwhelming demonstration of the intelligence you’re defending.

I’m a colorblind guy with aphantasia and zero visual artistic skill. I pick a frame of video and sometimes add markings/text. The default used to be google doing that for you if you didn’t feel like it, but I don’t know what the default behavior is these days.

I want to post my opinion.

A youtuber I followed was out for a few months. I’m not speculating what happend, but after he is back, he started using AI thumbnails.

He’s in the video inside and his voice is the same, but that AI thumbnail actually makes me hesitate everytime if I should click it or pass it over.

So you find the feedback of your demographic mildly infuriating?

There’s a myriad of reasons not to use AI aside from taking peoples jobs.

You don’t like AI when it takes jobs from people, but if your friend isn’t capable of creating a thumbnail themselves, they’d have to hire someone. Also, the LLM was trained on other artist’s work, so it’s fucked to use it anyway.

If they’re using ai for the thumbnail… they’re probably using AI elsewhere in the video. And yes, you absolutely are supposed to judge a book by the cover. That’s the whole point of cover art/dustjackets- to tell you what’s inside.

Further, even if that’s not true, they’re still okay with the ethical failings of ai-generated art.

For real! Unless it’s the reprint of a classic. Then they slap just any old picture onto them. I have a Yasushi Inue novel that looks as if it was a pulp samurai-western. The book does at least heavily feature samurai, though.

If they’re using ai for the thumbnail… they’re probably using AI elsewhere in the video.

One does not automatically follow from the other. I simply use a screenshot from the video because I don’t care about views but for the people who do care, a good (as in makes people click) thumbnail is extremely important - perhaps eventhe most important. Making a thumbnail like that by hand is not easy, but with the assist from AI it is and most people don’t care. This militant anti-AI activism is by a small and vocal minority group of people. There’s no point in spending hours in Photoshop when AI does it better in 15 minutes and now you have 10 options to choose from.

I don’t like it nor do I usually watch those videos but I surely don’t blame them for doing it. It’s a ruthless game played on YouTube’s terms and this is what it takes if you wish to even get a chance as a small creator.

So what you are saying the most important job of a creator is to create a thumbnail? So it’s not bad if a creator is using ai for the thumbnail?

That’s like if a guitarist is saying plugging the strings is really important so I use ai for it. I am just a guitarist I can not do all

I’m not sure what you mean by “it doesn’t follow.” It absolutely does.

If you use a tool for one specific task, and that tool is also useful for other, functionally identical tasks, you’re probably going to use that tool for the second task.

Like if a carpenter uses a Stanley #4 bench plane to finish a table top, they’re probably also going to use it for finish a cabinet’s top or side walls, etc.

Similarly, if a carpenter uses a jig saw to cross cut a board, it’s likely they’re also perfectly okay with using powered drills.

So if someone uses generative ai to create a thumbnail for the video, they’re likely to use it to create other graphics in the video.

If someone uses generative ai for those tasks, they’re also likely to use LLMs or other ai tools for other tasks.

Some one already using Ai is more likely to use AI again.

I don’t care whose fault it is, content creators aren’t entitled to my clicks. I have no obligation to click any video on YouTube, never mind watch the full thing.

If the thumbnail is ai slop, I have exactly zero reasons to believe the rest of it won’t also have ai slop. The creator can make whatever choices they want.

But I have no obligation to that creator. So when I decide that the use of AI is unethical, and pass on any video that uses it- that’s fully my choice. Similarly peole snarking on the comments or downvoting it… that’s also their choice. (I’m not even sure its legitimately a brigade. Knowing nothing else about the matter, I’m skeptical.)

As a heavy YouTube user this simply is not my experience. Not that it never happens, but it’s not the default to the point that you can just assume that. In most cases your assumption is wrong.

Gaming YouTube is probably the clearest example. Everyone has an AI thumbnail and nobody has AI content in the video itself. Same applies to renovation, car mechanic, woodworking, machining, van life etc. Virtually everyone has 100% organic content but with an AI thumbnail.

AI content only starts appearing when you move to videos that used to heavily rely on stock video content or for example videos about history where real footage is not available. I assume it’s also the case often with short-form media but I wouldn’t know as I don’t consume any.

Maybe it just depends on your viewing habits and what the algorithm pushes. I see loads of top 10 movie clips (e.g. sci fi movies on Netflix) in my feed that have an AI generated thumbnail and when I’ve viewed some of them there’s been no apparent AI use in the video.

I am also seeing AI generated clips where the thumbnail doesn’t look AI generated. That one’s very annoying as I don’t want to watch AI generated videos at all.
