Look, I get it. I don’t like AI when it takes the jobs of people. But if a small-time YT creator uses it for a thumbnail it’s not the end of the world.

I’m not sure what you mean by “it doesn’t follow.” It absolutely does.
If you use a tool for one specific task, and that tool is also useful for other, functionally identical tasks, you’re probably going to use that tool for the second task.
Like if a carpenter uses a Stanley #4 bench plane to finish a table top, they’re probably also going to use it for finish a cabinet’s top or side walls, etc.
Similarly, if a carpenter uses a jig saw to cross cut a board, it’s likely they’re also perfectly okay with using powered drills.
So if someone uses generative ai to create a thumbnail for the video, they’re likely to use it to create other graphics in the video.
If someone uses generative ai for those tasks, they’re also likely to use LLMs or other ai tools for other tasks.
Some one already using Ai is more likely to use AI again.
I don’t care whose fault it is, content creators aren’t entitled to my clicks. I have no obligation to click any video on YouTube, never mind watch the full thing.
If the thumbnail is ai slop, I have exactly zero reasons to believe the rest of it won’t also have ai slop. The creator can make whatever choices they want.
But I have no obligation to that creator. So when I decide that the use of AI is unethical, and pass on any video that uses it- that’s fully my choice. Similarly peole snarking on the comments or downvoting it… that’s also their choice. (I’m not even sure its legitimately a brigade. Knowing nothing else about the matter, I’m skeptical.)
As a heavy YouTube user this simply is not my experience. Not that it never happens, but it’s not the default to the point that you can just assume that. In most cases your assumption is wrong.
Gaming YouTube is probably the clearest example. Everyone has an AI thumbnail and nobody has AI content in the video itself. Same applies to renovation, car mechanic, woodworking, machining, van life etc. Virtually everyone has 100% organic content but with an AI thumbnail.
AI content only starts appearing when you move to videos that used to heavily rely on stock video content or for example videos about history where real footage is not available. I assume it’s also the case often with short-form media but I wouldn’t know as I don’t consume any.
Maybe it just depends on your viewing habits and what the algorithm pushes. I see loads of top 10 movie clips (e.g. sci fi movies on Netflix) in my feed that have an AI generated thumbnail and when I’ve viewed some of them there’s been no apparent AI use in the video.
I am also seeing AI generated clips where the thumbnail doesn’t look AI generated. That one’s very annoying as I don’t want to watch AI generated videos at all.
That’s what I’m trying to say here as well.
Gaming is the lowest of YouTube content. It’s like those reaction videos.
