You have to wonder: How did this come to anyone’s attention in the first place? But it could be that the person who lost the money asked for help, and the cameras caught the story.
So this may not be as baleful a sign of our times as it at first seems. But how much effort do police departments make for stolen bicycles? It’s definitely an example of the cops taking a crime seriously, not because the crime is serious, but because the case is easy.

I once had the cops find my stolen bike, because the state required you to have a registration number.
I never picked it up since the reason they recovered it is because they saw a black guy riding it and figured it must be stolen.

It was real. The cops got shit for it, but they claim the guy saw a lady drop it. In the end, he gave the money back.
Albany authorities said the man saw the woman drop the money at the store and could have faced charges in the case. However, because he returned the $30, charges would not be filed.

If you see someone drop money and then you take it, however is that different in terms of criminal code if you don’t see someone drop the money and then take it? It makes you an asshole, but what is the actual difference in terms of a criminal charge? Does it fall under some Good Samaritan laws?

I’ve not tried to claim one, but the reported info from people who look for people using OSINT to try to claim rewards is that it’s complicated.
Some read “if convicted” as a contingency. “Up to” can be in the wording. Which agrency posted the reward? Is that who you called? Did you talk to someone and get supervisor approval (my favorite) before giving info on someone?
Who does that, by the way? What if they say no, not in the budget any more, and then you decline to give info, now are you guilty of something chargeable?
