Quite terrible to have all that wealth in the hands of so few. We should distribute that more evenly to raise the quality of living for more.

I have 512GB of ECC in one server, 64GB of DDR5 in my desktop, and probably another couple of hundred GB or so of DDR4 from previous desktops in a box on my shelf.

Starting to worry about a home invasion by one of the AI companies.

To be clear I’m not demonizing us for talking about it, but that’s his tactic. He says something that keeps him in the news cycle, that keeps him in the minds of investors, which keeps his valuation up, and that’s the money. If he became irrelevant in the news that would mean his valuation was going down, and he’d be losing money - so yes I think him stirring the pot is to keep OpenAI relevant and talked about.

            In the “minds” of investors.

How many of those investors are automated systems at this point? They may literally only be registering that his name was in the news and not even be capable of considering why. But more mentions feeds into the algorithm moving a few more decimal points toward ‘buy’, regardless of context.

I have previously posted about having a set of 20cl rum bottles, each bottle being dedicated to when I no longer have to live on the same planet as particular bastards that do their best to ruin everything they touch.

I recently bought another set of 20cl rum bottles, and I am thinking of dedicating them to AI companies crashing and burning…

But I am worried, they may not crash and burn, some other person will just buy them before they die completely…

I don’t like having too many open bottles at once. Shame distilling even just for personal consumption is illegal here as I would love to make some of my own spirits to go with my mead. Easier storage for spirits too tbh.

It’s not wine, it doesn’t go off quickly. There’s this concept of the “infinity bottle” where you make your own ever-evolving blend of leftovers. It’s usually associated with whiskey but can work well for rums.

He can rent ram from me if he thinks it’s so terrible, it’s the best option for those who need compute after all. I’ll rent a VM with 16GB of RAM to him for let’s say $1000 a month. Go ahead Sam, it’s the best utilization after all. For $5,000 a month you can have a part time “spot” instance with a GPU.

Oh but I don’t work like Nvidia, Sam, you get the same terms we do with subscriptions. You miss one payment, one payment doesn’t clear, you’re cut off.

That sounds about fair for how us consumers have been treated.

Next he’ll be paying off politicians to make it legal for police to come to your door and seize your RAM for ‘national security’. There’ll be a huge right wing media campaign, funded by the taxpayer, under the heading ‘The War Against Home RAM’. People who own their own computers will be labelled ‘terrorists’.

Only a moron would think OpenAI was ever turning profitable.

      There were two possible ways,

      1. Subscription prices rose to a point no one would be interested to pay.

      2. Inference got so cheap, that 98% of all use cases could be run by open weight models on local machines

In both situations OpenAi and Anthropic lost.

The bull case has been a bear case since the beginning. Both companies will most likely stay alive, but will eventually have their costs turned down as they’re going to be bought out by some of the mastodonts.

The best possible scenario for either of them, is if a government want a frontier lab and decides to buy one already functioning. Rather than having their universities start from scratch

They die if we use local models.

The second profit condition would be it got so cheap they could make bank on data collection

Maybe, maybe not. Phones are getting more optimized for AI and have decent RAM, so the on device models may not be great at agentic problem solving, but they’ll probably meet most people’s AI needs

Plus, any reasonable gaming computer or MacBook can run models… Maybe a bit slowly and maybe just the compressed 8gb models, but they can pretty much all do it to some degree

So I think we’ll be in a place where there’s little or no upfront cost after a couple more key advancements

Manufacturers don’t even really want mechanics fixing them. Yes, we put that part that we know breaks in a position that requires disassembling half the engine. We’ll say it’s a 1 hour job. Good luck getting paid grease monkeys- now everyone shut up and buy more cars.

Definitely. If owners had to buy a new car every time it broke down, that would be nearly the manufacturers’ ideal situation. Personally I was as impressed as disgusted by the boldness of deploying features as a subscription. They still sold, so what do I know?
