Hasan Piker, an influential streamer and political commentator, has recently criticized Cornell University for allegedly punishing Palestinian student activists more severely than students accused of committing sexual assault. Piker’s claims have added to public outrage over the Ivy League school following the lawsuit filed against it over the alleged 2024 gang rape in a campus fraternity house.

During his visit to Cornell University on Thursday, when he addressed an audience of around 450 people at Sage Chapel, Piker commented that students participating in pro-Palestinian demonstrations have been given more severe punishments than students found guilty of committing sexual crimes. In particular, the controversial statements he made during his visit have spread rapidly online.

“You got more of a penalty at Cornell University if you participated in a pro-Palestine student encampment,” Piker has claimed. “I was talking to some of the leaders of the pro-Palestine encampments. One of them got expelled for a year. They got suspended for a year.”

“They got literally worse penalties in Cornell University than half of the rapists did, or than most of the rapists did,” Piker said. “It’s (expletive) nuts.”

I refuse to accept that Hasan Piker is a relevant political figure. This guy is a twitch streamer. Why is he giving speeches at universities. Get me out of here

Legacy media is paid for by the wealthy. And their reporting is curated to make sure the wealthy stay in power and make more money. Never has this been more clear to more people during my lifetime. Independent newspapers are largely dead. Streamers and content creators are the “unbiased” journalists of our age… Like it or not, they are the best we have. Either accept that, or continue to dance to the beat of the billionaire’s drum.

I don’t like it any more than anyone but it’s just the world we live in. There’s a bunch of big streamers promoting right wing ideas who are embraced by the Republican party, and Hasan is the only equivalent on the left with anything close to the same audience. If we don’t adapt to a changing media environment, they will. Or rather, they already have.

Personally, I think people should read books, but what are you going to do?

So the delivery vehicle matters more than the content? Would you eat a shit sandwich delivered in a limo?

Don’t make lazy arguments, it makes you sound like a stupid bot. Pay attention to the words and actions of a person not the color suit he wears or type of car he drives.

He’s a political analyst with a bachelors in political science and communication, and he has a twitch stream. Streaming is the easiest way to have your own show. I don’t think you should just lump people into a category because they decided to stream on Twitch, lots of different kinds of people stream on Twitch. “Just a Twitch streamer” is a thought-terminating cliche meant to make you discredit the opinions of anyone who goes live on the site.

That’s gamergate loser mentality. Reject the framing that Steve Bannon injected into you covertly.

If this guy influences a lot of people’s thinking, he is a political figure, whether you like him or not. Being a streamer does not diminish that fact, specially since nowadays a lot of people engage in this kind of platform.

Same, feels like I’m taking crazy pills. He may be right, but not two months ago he was “that twitch guy zapping his dog”, and now reddit is full of his opinions and he’s a “progressive political commentator” with threads chock full of bots agreeing with him. I’d swear he’s being manufactured.

“that twitch guy zapping his dog”,

Disinformation campaign through and through. That’s exactly why they pushed that lie - to make people like you who agree with Piker’s points question him and move away from those ideas.

I don’t have a horse in this race but to me it looks like he climbed in views exactly because of that controversy, true or not. Can’t believe I’m arguing over psyops with a guy that posts in a single day as much as I ( or your avg lemming ) manage to post im a whole goddamn year.

Hasan didn’t climb in views because of that controversy, he’s been pulling 15-30k viewers at any given moment for like 6 years now. You had just never watched before and that was the entire point of that Dan Saltman manufactured campaign: to get you to hear his name in a negative light before you could discover him on your own.

chomsky described went on and on for decades about how media personalities that benefit the united states are artificially elevated and piker seems to be the next one in line like charlie kirk once was.

Do you have any evidence that Hasan is being artificially elevated? Financial ties with billionaires, anything like that (which we absolutely had with Kirk)?

It seems to me like Hasan’s audience is organic. Now, you could certainly argue that certain points get watered down, that he has an incentive to tell people what they want to hear in order to grow his audience. But if you’re claiming that he’s being propped up by George Soros or somebody, that probably calls for something more substantial than speculation.

Chomsky was describing normal media outlets who editorialised personalities to elevate.

        This does not apply here.

He’s not a media personality that is being artificially elevated to benefit the United States though. Both the Republicans and the establishment Dems are fighting tooth and nail for people to stop listening to him. He’s prevailing because he’s not being artificially elevated - he’s being elevated by those that agree with his points against the US.

So you don’t like an effective political communicator because…? He uses a different platform than the mainstream outlets? Dude is an effective force for good policy, who gives a shit about where he gained a following. You don’t see politicians able to speak the truth as directly. We need people like Hasan in combination with better politicians. Literally don’t see the downside.
