    STACHER7 FOR YT-DLP

yt-dlp is the gold standard for ripping YouTube vids (as well as vids/music from damn near anywhere else). However, yt-dlp is not particularly user friendly, like, at all. There is a GUI wrapper called Stacher7 that makes it a whole lot easier to use. It’s one of the better things I’ve installed on my computer.

I give you all permission to download mine.

Please just credit anything you might use and tag my channel. Cheers.

yt-dlp is the thing every software is using, so use that. But on Android I would recommend something like NewPipe or PipePipe. Those are adfree alternative Youtube clients where you can watch your videos, but also download them from the GUI. That might be easier than termux

In tje past years I have downloaded and archived about 200 GB of my favorite YouTube videos using yt-dlp. Most of them are low resolution for storage reasons, so it’s a lot more videos than you’d think. Now they can’t be taken away from me and I can watch them whenever I want.

So yt-dlp can be a bit rough for non-power users. There is a fantastic GUI wrapper for it called Stacher7. I use it daily.

I dunno if I would call it rough; it’s just a CLI tool. You write yt-dlp and then paste in the URL.

Maybe I’m doing that xkcd comic where I overestimate average people’s familiarity with CLI though. It only gets complicated if you want to customise it beyond the basic flags in your global config file. I set it to include chapters and download subtitles for example. Once I get home I’ll try and remember to paste my config file here.

I usually have to download YouTube videos just to watch them… YouTube doesn’t like my browser set-up or something and purposely makes things difficult

i refuse to disable them to find out. could be due to vpn too. sometimes, randomly, it just works as intended, but downloading only adds a few seconds

I uploaded some music videos to odyssee, need to pick that up, I recently checked out my YouTube bookmarks and at least 1 third was not working anymore

Yt-dlp is great! I used it it to download podcasts from Youtube so I could listen on my phone. Only later I discovered I can download straight through Pipepipe(youtube client). I actually even used it shortly for regular videos as well to watch them through VLC just so at the end of the day I wouldn’t get hooked on youtube shorts and the rest of the nonsense on the front page.

Yt-dlp also works for most social media sites. X, Tiktok, etc…

Not sure about the value of downloading videos for the sake of storing them (after you’ve watched them) tho. I rarely rewatch videos.

If you really want to go deep, set up TubeArchivist. It’s pretty neat. My offline library is about 30TB now.
