Don’t scan your face for Insta,

    The influencers want your polaroid.

Don’t scan your face for Twitter,

    Elon wants your dogecoin.

Don’t scan your face for YouTube,

    The vloggers want your shorts.

Don’t scan your face for Twitch,

The Slime Ranchers want your plorts.

I’ve always obsessively kept my photos off any cloud provider for years only to discover that the entire rest of the family have a treasure trove of fully tagged pictures of me uploaded to every major provider out there. In most cases I think it even ties the tag to my phone/email/birthday entry in their Contacts list.

Always wondered about this, if they receive a GDPR request from you do they have to delete others tagged pictures of you and your contact details? I mean it is your personal data technically.

Yeah, they do. AIUI there’s some nuance about what constitutes “legitimate interest” so it’s possible (probable in fact) they might only delete pictures where you’re the main subject but not e.g. group photos from events

Hard to call it an ai company when it doesn’t make ai models, proton is no more an ai company then the many companies adding ai to their website as an assistant

Proton are an ai company because they have their own ai, they also have the most ridiculous brand fans.

They don’t have their own ai, they have an ai frontend which runs preexisting open weight ai models.

Proton does have a lot of fans probably because they are the most well known ‘privacy’ company and a lot of people set and forget without reading into them.

          they have their own ai

          They don’t make it:

          https://proton.me/blog/lumo-ai

Lumo is based upon open-source language models and operates from Proton’s European datacenters. This gives you much greater transparency into the way Lumo works than any other major AI assistant. Unlike Apple Intelligence and others, Lumo is not a partnership with OpenAI or other American or Chinese AI companies, and your queries are never sent to any third parties. Our research and development will remain focused on open models, which we will continuously improve and augment.

Per discussions online, it seems to be a mix of small Mistral and Olmo models, and GLM for the max tier.

This’d be like arguing a company hosting database software to serve a product is a “database software company.” They are a hosting some tool made by someone else, with a sticker.

they also have the most ridiculous brand fans.

Perhaps. I’m a bit scared of how much critical mass they have, TBH. But this does not make them an AI company.

            https://lumo.proton.me/

“Meet Lumo, the zero-access encrypted AI assistant by Proton”

I had a 2 year subscription with proton, I walked away from it with more than a year remaining. The ai and the right wing thing is just the tip of the iceberg, but I don’t live to supply links and proof to proton fanboys (which is how this always goes), so all I suggest is that people pay attention to protons social media (reddit in particular) for a while before giving them your money and trusting them with your details, emails etc. If people cannot be bothered putting some effort into their choices, so be it, not my problem.

You are not wrong to be suspicious. I am suspicious of them TBH, we will see how they go.

But to be a bit more specific, I’m just saying that if one labels every company that provides a branded chatbot UI (or similar) as an “AI company,” that is an awfully big bucket. It’s basically any company that buys LLM usage for any user facing kind of purpose, and that is going to include a lot of otherwise great companies/projects that are not really “AI companies.”

roblox enforces age verification and separates users into age groups. yet, moderation is in shambles (did i mention ai-assisted?) and separating the kids in one bunch and the teenagers in another basically is just a feast for pedos and groomers

I had to scan my face a hundred times already for a hundred different places…

Hell, I live in a closed colony and the only way in is with a face scan. My biometric data is surely for sale in a hundred different places by now, so I guess I don’t really care anymore

Its not like I have an option if I still want to get home

Yeah same here. I mean you’re getting scanned everywhere now, like the grocery store, but I’m not linking my computer to my face. I will say going through the airport in Japan is a breeze compared to the shit show in US airports.

I get off the plane, get in line to check in and get my sticker, set up luggage delivery, and walk out.
