The chain grocery store near us (Safeway) has had stupidly high prices since the pandemic. I decided I’m not going to shop there anymore unless I really have to. We are lucky to have a locally-owned, small chain grocery store very close to us. Prices are high but honestly not much if at all higher than Safeway and I’d rather pay a small premium to help them stay in business. Also I doubt they would ever opt into something like this stupid price scheme, but Safeway absolutely would and will.

My kid last year in 5th grade (or maybe even the year before?) and his classmates figured out they could use shared Google Docs on their school accounts to have chats with each other, during school. The parent side of me rolled my eyes but the 80s kid in me was legitimately proud. Did I narc on them? Hell no.

The one hilarious thing is that all sorts of new social issues arise with this kind of workaround. Document names get changed, someone deletes something that someone else thinks is important, etc., and they have to work it out. So it’s a learning experience, for sure!

Mine are probably lasting about as long as previous non-EV cars, but I’m also terrible about getting them rotated when it’s not combined with an oil change.

I was a big fan growing up. Really liked Achtung Baby and of course Joshua Tree is a great album. I even liked Zooropa and Pop. Went to see them live in the 2000s but by then the shine was wearing off; I was getting older and being a fan of things wasn’t as important to my identity anymore. But I was curious recently, so I looked up when their partnership with Apple started… Yeah, it was exactly the time I stopped liking them as much. It was both validating and depressing to make that connection. I’d always nodded along when people talked about bands selling out, but U2 was my band and they weren’t supposed to do that! Now I feel like they’re the poster child of selling out.

Yeah what is up with that? There are so many of those stupid stickers lately. There is no way so many cars are being driven by student drivers. I told my kids that when they’re learning to drive in a few years, there’s no fucking way I’ll put one on my car.

There was a big scandal some years back because an Apple employee left a prototype phone at the bar/restaurant next to the campus, so they definitely do it. I’m a bit surprised that they didn’t crack down harder after that incident, but to be fair to this guy, he didn’t take it out and about and just took it home. I can’t say I’d be overly worried about something happening to it if it was just at my house, but I also don’t have people crashing with me frequently…

My husband has been wondering if he should get formally diagnosed for ADHD now that our kid has been. (Talk about a carbon copy of a parent, this kid, geeze.) This explains a lot about the way he cooks. He always says it’s because he “needs more practice” but all I see is a chaotic stressful experience, and of course if I try to help him I just get in the way and make him irritated that I seem to think he can’t manage it on his own. Anyway all I’m saying is that it’s interesting to read your comment because I wonder if that’s my husband’s trouble, too.

I get that. I had already been burned by VW with the TDI scandal, so I was pretty frustrated with car companies in general. Are any of them truly ethical or consumer-focused? We saw that Tesla was at least trying to make the electric car thing work and we wanted to support that movement—not because we think electric cars are the endgame solution, but because we think they’re a step in the right direction and we wanted to encourage the market to follow their lead.

And buying a car is not an investment. It’s not like we own Tesla stock.

One thing I did really, really like about buying a car from Tesla is that they don’t use a dealership model. What a breath of fresh air! I never want to buy from a dealer ever again if I can help it. But I think the next time we’re in the market, we’ll buy used anyway.

Flooding the used Tesla market is not a strategy I had heard before you mentioned it, actually. Maybe if I was in the same position that I was six years ago financially, I would be making different choices. But I’m not.

As for my soul, Lemmy talks a big game about focusing on the class struggle, but whenever I admit to having a Tesla, everyone piles on like I am the worst person ever. I got flat out scammed by VW and I certainly didn’t fucking know that Musk was quite as massive a tool as he has shown himself to be now. Maybe I wasn’t paying enough attention. But all I’m saying is that I’m not the real enemy here.

I guess I see what you’re saying about not trusting Elon Musk because he had promised something that thus far had not been delivered. And you’re right, we didn’t trust him and didn’t purchase the option. But we thought the car was still okay. I still like the car, for the most part. Does that make sense? The car and the full self driving option were two separate purchases, one of which we did not make.
