  • We don’t live in East Germany. We’re supposed to be living in democracies where our governments act in our best interests, and our rights are not for sale.

They had this surveillance, on a far greater scale

This is a mentally-ill level of ignorance. The KGB or Gestapo couldn’t even dream of the surveillance state Western capitalism has already built. They didn’t have tracking devices and microphones in the pockets of most adults on Earth. They didn’t capture millions of data points about all of their daily lives. They didn’t have billion dollar economies structured around the capture and sale of that data. They didn’t have the ability to flag dissidents or resistance autonomously, in real-time based on statistical modeling, or the capability to execute everyone they flag as opposition with cheap fully-autonomous drones. This is called turnkey-totalitarianism. All the tools have already been built. The only thing a tyrant needs to do is turn the key.

Either educate yourself about the world or keep your ignorance to yourself. Your opinion is currently worthless.

  • It’s almost like our institutions and political class across the developed world are acting on behalf of capital and not in the peoples best interests…

Maybe that’s why they all collude with surveillance capitalism to violate our civil rights wholesale, and expand the surveillance state…

These are not the actions of a government “for the people”. These are the actions of criminally corrupt tyrants and traitors who should spend the rest of their lives in prison. The fact that they won’t should tell you everything you need to know about our “democracies”.

  • The difference is that it was historically domestic capital pulling the strings and manipulating politics; unless you were being occupied by a foreign force (colonialism, etc). Foreign entities manipulating domestic politics and economics was generally considered an act of war.

Now we have multinationals wealthier than nation states, who have seized the means of democracy buy bribing our political classes, and not even domestic capitalists have any allegiance to their nation; just raw unmitigated greed, narcissism, and psychopathy in the name of profit and power. It’s a systemic mental illness.

  • You can still do that. When they released Unlimited some modular options became more expensive than Unlimited, but included the same thing, so those were removed (because at that point you should just use Unlimited). This was pro-consumer, and most companies do the opposite. As far as I’m aware they have never removed features that used to exist, and their plans have only gotten cheaper (when accounting for inflation, and comparing to all other tech corpos). You can’t expect to continue paying the $2 you were paying for mail in 2015 forever.

  • That is not the same thing. If you took that offer you’d be worse off and couldn’t ever get it back. It’s an intentional dark pattern to screw the customer into a shittier offering.

This is just a web design fail. The “VPN Plus” plan they are on is probably an existing 12 or 24 month rate. The new offer is probably the same thing, or a special discount for 24 months of “Unlimited”, which includes like 5 extra services. They could always go back to “VPN Plus”. (I am seeing a cheaper rate of 3.99 EUR for 12m, or 2.99 for 24m https://protonvpn.com/pricing).

  • What you’re describing is the theorised end state of capitalism. See crony-capitalism, state-capitalism, plutocracy, kakistrocracy, kleptocracy.

You can still own private property in a world that outlaws billionaires, requires strong redistribution of wealth, and ensures every large enterprise is democratic, instead of plutocratic. Reality is not binary. But if you don’t accept that the existence of an ultra wealthy elite is an anti-democratic threat to the life and liberty of everyone — to the rule of law and social contract — you’re gonna end up in an authoritarian fascist or communist hellscape run by megalomaniacal psychopaths who don’t care about you, cut from the same cloth as each other. You can either support things that benefit the majority, or boot lick the criminally corrupt. If you choose to lick the boot, don’t be a petty little bitch and complain when the world comes crashing down around you.

  • Surely it could not be that neoliberalism (proto-fascism), and their progressive underfunding and destruction of education and all social services, has been the dominant political philosophy across the developed world for the for the last 55 years?

Surely it could not be that those same neoliberal proto-fascists have also been using their capital to wage psychological warfare across the media that entire time, and supercharged its effectiveness with the internet, then big data and analytics; now AI?

Computers are not the problem. The problem is the implementation was done by salesmen of big tech and for-profit enterprises, to sell hardware and software, solely for their own benefit; it’s a continuation of the privatisation of education systems that neoliberals have been championing the entire time. It was not done based on long term study or empiric evidence. If it were, it would have been done via academia and open source tools that could be replicated everywhere.

Computers can definitely supercharge learning, but that ain’t gonna come from big tech or private enterprise trying to maximise profits. It needs to be done by the public education system, for the benefit of the public education system. Built by educators, with the sole purpose of delivering education as efficiently as possible.
