Trying to get rid of bots is a worthwhile endeavor. How exactly you do it, and I criticize captchas as well, is up to debate, yes. But dismissing it completely just means you haven’t really noticed what those measures do. It’s like an IT department that just works and that management thinks is unnecessary.

Because like I said, different measures hold back different bots.

If there are 3 bot softwares, maybe 1 can solve captcha and use accounts, 1 can only make accounts, 1 can only use captcha.

With only account login you get 2 bots, with only captcha you also get 2 bots, with captcha before login you only get 1 bot.

Bots are a problem. No single measure completely gets rid of them. Each measure just removes some of the bots. I personally think accounts are a decent measure, everyone should have a password manager anyway that lets them automatically log in on all their devices.

The problem of course is the tracking that’s being done with the accounts, but I think the accounts themselves aren’t the problem.

Federation doesn’t allow you to ignore DMCAs, not hosting in the US does. Federation has absolutely no impact on DMCA’s functioning.

Isn’t git technically already P2P? Everyone has the complete repo, and everyone can pull from everyone else, as long as a connection can be established. The networking/organization of this is just not automatic.

You’re absolutely correct that it is bad practice, however, 98% of people already follow bad practice out of convenience. All the points you mentioned against “DoWnlOADing a BinAary” are true, but it’s simply what people do and already don’t care about.

You can offer only your way of installing and people will complain about the inconvenience of it. Especially if there’s another similar project that does offer the more convenient way.

The only thing you can rationally recommend is to not make the install script the “recommended” way, and recommend they download the binaries from the source code page and verify checksums. But most people won’t care and use the install script anyway.

If the install script were “bloody pointless”, it would not exist. Most people don’t know their architecture, the script selects it for them. Most people don’t know what “adding to path” means, this script does it for them. Most people don’t know how to install shell completions, this script does it for them.

You massively overestimate the average competence of software developers and how much they care. Now, a project can try to educate them and lose potential users, or a project can follow user behavior. It’s not about defeating tracking of yourself, but who you share the link to, your relationship with them.

Without that tracking parameter, if the URL is common among many people (which it usually is, since usually one thing has one URL for everyone), then it’s impossible to know who shared to who.

If you have the tracking parameter, then the service can know that you shared the URL, as well as who you shared it to, being able to put that information together and thus built more of a profile on your social connections.

I’m a programmer, and if they generate page URLs that are unique to you with your tracking baked in, do not allow you to view the page non-logged in, then there’s no way to get rid of it, short of hacking their servers/databases.

If you can view it without an account, then you just browse without an account, without using a browser that has a unique fingerprint. So basically use something like the Tor one. Unfortunately for Instagram, I think both is not possible.

Of course it might be like the other comment says, it’s only the special share URL that is like this, and the one you browse around normally isn’t. Then you just use that one.

I just use the qbittorrent “search” feature. Add some of the search plugins for different sites that you can find when you open the search options.

*Arrs are nicer, but a lot to setup imo. qbittorrent you just download, open it when you need it, and then you’re done with it. If you don’t torrent a lot, it’s more time-efficient.
