The whole furry thing is creepy as hell. It’s weird. Wanting to have sex with anthropomorphized animals is not a thing that should be normalized.

And it’s even creepier when they add things like “kitten” or showing anthropomorphized animal kids.

And thank you to Unruffled [they/them] / Flatworm7591 @lemmy.dbzer0.com for this sane and reasonable response.

And thanks to recursive_recursion who seems to be an alt of Flatworm for continuing that sane and reasonable response. Note that in over 1,400 comments here I’ve never once said a single word against trans people. Not once.

It really bothers me when people lie about racism. So many people really do experience it so much in life, and lying using false racism accusations as a sword and shield to make other people look bad and make themselves look like the victim is demeaning to every real instance people suffer.

Hopefully one day this person realizes that lying about transphobia for the same reasons does the same thing.

That’s actually even better. “I dislike this opinion so much that I will complain that it’s popular so it gets deleted.”

If mental gymnastics burned as many calories as the real thing we’d never need to get off the internet and go get some exercise. :)

It’s not mental gymnastics and it’s not about disliking the opinion, it’s legitimately not unpopular. Dunking on furries has been popular on the internet since at least 2005, it is extremely mainstream and probably the gateway for young people to the more toxic parts of the internet since blatant bigotry is more likely to be removed.

I’ve never spoken a word to you and you jump in to insult me. This is how intolerance works. Tribalism. When people feel one opinion or reaction is the socially acceptable one for the group and someone else is honest about disagreeing then you feel it’s socially acceptable to attack that person. Shun the outsider. The evolutionary psychology of millions of years of mainly relatively small groups spread out with little contact with outsiders definitely didn’t prepare us for being lumped together on the internet.

I think they’re sincere, but it’s sorta starting to feel like they’re using this as a soapbox from which to preach intolerance. While not quite as charged as the topic of trans people, a lot of the rhetoric they’re using in here is only one swapped noun away from being a Nigel Farage tweet.

How am I preaching intolerance? If you swap one noun for any thing that any person dislikes or finds creepy with a noun for the ones Hitler or Farage were known to complain the loudest about then of course it becomes something awful.

It seems weird and creepy. That’s my opinion. I’m not saying they should be set on fire. I don’t care what any consenting adults do in their own bedrooms. But it’s become so normalized online, and typically in clearly sexual manners, that it’s starting to feel more like dragging the non-consenting general public into a fetish act.

I don’t understand how someone would term that as intolerance. The world is full of strange fetishes, and they’re typically kept in that private part of people’s lives. There are loads of fetishes consenting adults enjoy with one another that most of the people in here down voting would complain about seeing images of posted regularly (with all genitals covered).

          I mean that:

But it’s become so normalized online, and typically in clearly sexual manners, that it’s starting to feel more like dragging the non-consenting general public into a fetish act.

This shit is exactly what people say about queer people online. It’s almost 1:1 the identical rhetoric. “I’m not saying they should be killed, I don’t care what they do in their own homes, but” Please, look back on that and consider if you’re seriously okay with saying this about someone else. Your arguments here are just plain bigotry, but because you feel morally justified in that they’re doing weird sex pervert stuff you’re making the internal distinction that this is okay behavior, even though a quick skim of your post history makes you look like someone who would be right at the front of the pushback if some chud came in to say this about any other "But I think they’re weird, and I’m entitled to my own opinion!!" marginalized group.

If the topic were people sexually attracted to children making artwork that depicts children characters in sexual way and wearing similar costumes in public, would you be telling someone the same thing?

Yes, we know that having sex with children is very wrong. But some people are sexually attracted to them and can’t control that. Likewise having sex with animals is something we know is very wrong. Saying a drawn character isn’t really an animal and they’d never do that to a real animal seems the exact same situation as those who say drawn sexualized children aren’t real kids and they’d never do that to a real child.

How about if it’s people masturbating in public? I don’t care if they do that in the privacy of their own homes, but it’s not alright to do in the middle of the street. Similarly, wearing gimp costumes, ball gags, and strap-ons while walking down a public street isn’t great either even if those people aren’t exposing their genitalia in public.

Yeah, saying that you don’t think the actions of some people are things they should be doing in public can be twisted if you imaging they’re saying they don’t think people should be being black or gay in public. But that isn’t what’s being said, it’s you trying to be tolerant and accepting to the point where anyone saying doing something in public seems bad leads to you imagining them in a KKK hood holding a torch.

Your argument is now to insist that that I’m ‘too woke’. Please, just step back and listen to yourself for a moment. You’re better than this, and you know these arguments are in any other context bullshit. Why is there an exception when you’re the one sincerely saying these horrible things?

You’re taking the exact same rhetoric they use against queers, blacks, trans…es, and just turning it onto a group of people you don’t like. I’m not arguing that this could be extrapolated to you being bigoted against those people, I’m saying that you are literally using the same phrases as they use, just for a different group of people that you personally don’t like.

How about if it’s people masturbating in public?

Are they doing that, though? Because I’m pretty sure you’re just equating wearing a fursuit to be the same as masturbating in public to shore up your argument.

Saying a drawn character isn’t really an animal and they’d never do that to a real animal

Sorry, you edited this bit in: “Won’t someone think of the children!?!” is a tired trope too. “What if children see the pride parade, is that acceptable? What if some man claims they’re trans so they can sneak into the women’s bathroom and peep on your kid while they jerk off in a stall!!” As has been repeatedly explained in this thread, there’s a vast difference between anthro pornography and actual beastiality, much as there’s a difference between lolicon and CSAM.

Sorry, no. I’m never going to say that drawn or CGI images of kids having sex is alright. It’s not. I don’t care that they’re not real kids, I don’t care that they’re not real animals. It’s creepy and depicting something that’s very not alright.

You’re taking the exact same rhetoric they use against queers, blacks, trans…es, and just turning it onto a group of people you don’t like. You understand that the reason we have protected groups is because it’s not considered wrong to ever dislike anything any group of people does, right?

There are tons of things that people do that are considered bad, wrong, creepy, or weird. There are an awful lot of humans, so many of those things have many people who enjoy doing those creepy, wrong things. Just because a group of people likes doing a thing doesn’t mean it’s evil intolerance to say that thing creeps you the fuck out. That’s the reason I gave you the examples.

If there were a large group of people who decided they liked to shit their pants, reach their hands down and scoop some up and sit eating it in public, that would be weird and creepy and fucked up. Saying you found it to be that would not be similar to saying you hate Jews.

I hate when people talk on speakerphone or listen to tiktok or whatever they’re doing at full volume in public. A sadly large number of people seem to like doing that. I am intolerant of that thing, because it is annoying. That does not mean I hate black people.

… I’m sorry, your argument is now “it’s acceptable to be racist”?

You really might want to rephrase this because I can’t figure out an interpretation of that that’s more flattering for you. This is “I’m entitled to my opinion, librul” being taken to a spectacular extreme, and I’m really hoping it’s just poorly said and not the mask off moment it feels like.

I think that if Karoline Leavitt had said the same thing, you would push back to her rhetoric just as I’m doing here and that trying to make this into an argument over someone’s right to an opinion is an intellectually dishonest way to approach this conversation.

I’ve run into a whole lot of art of sexualized animal-people just browsing default feeds in different places. It certainly seems to have a big component of that. But even without that, putting on costumes and getting together with a lot of other grown adults so you can all pretend your animals is still really weird.

To elaborate the fandom is basically a large open and mostly supportive community of neurodivergent people. I don’t have a source but i’d wager that over 80% of us are on the autism spectrum. Yeah we are weird, we know, we do not care. Its nice to be able to express yourself more freely through a character or avatar.

Going through the released Epstein files there was a picture of a ~20 year old woman prostrating naked in front of a giant image of Jesus. That stuff definitely gets creepy too.

I wonder how many communities I’ll be banned from by the end of the day for being honest about things that seem creepy and having it called “transphobia.”

Spiders creep me out. Sometimes clowns. People who live at the Renne Faire and never break character? Maybe a little. Millipedes and Centipedes for sure, those are definitely creepy. Some basements when the lights are off. Maybe most basements.

All 8 billion of us are never going to like all the same things and agree on all of the same things. It would be nice if we could be honest but not hate and try to change or murder each other. I will never support someone for eating olives, because ick. But also I try to not suggest starting lynch mobs to hunt them all down.

It bugs me a lot when people use false accusations of racism to make someone look bad and themselves look like the victim, because it demeans every real awful thing people live through. Hopefully one day this person realizes that. You can use that as a lie to get people on your side quickly, but it’s breaking trust and demeaning the struggles of the people you’re claiming to support.

Yes. It’s a facet of human psychology and one of the most important facets of evolutionary psychology.

It’s so strange to see this weird internet subculture. People are very upset at the idea that I find the whole furry thing to be creepy. The internet is full of sexualized pictures of animals and it was one of the main reasons people bought those costumes when it started growing decades ago.

Somehow it’s become normalized online to sexualize anthropomorphized animals, but to think humans having the basic attraction to other members of their species that leads to fantasizing and it the main reason we all exist is wrong and perverted.

If you think your opinion here is anything other than extremely popular, perhaps you should spend less time in online furry spaces? Unless you just happen to live on of the rare places where furries are relatively more represented (like Seattle has a furry bar and maybe there’s an above-average representation around the areas that host some of the biggest fur-cons like Pittsburgh & Chicago?)

I know my opinion is unpopular here, that is why I posted it to this community. The loads of angry down votes seems to say it’s not a very popular opinion here.

Unless you just happen to live on of the rare places where furries are relatively more represented (like Seattle has a furry bar and maybe there’s an above-average representation around the areas that host some of the biggest fur-cons like Pittsburgh & Chicago?)

I think you’ll find that there’s a lot of people in the fediverse that are in those areas.

I don’t mind what consenting adults do in their bedroom.

I very much mind when there’s a furries-day-out and they’re encouraging children to hug them for pictures and the like. I don’t know who is behind the mask and that sets off alarm bells for me.

It was odd to go to the zoo and see dozens of furries enjoying watching the caged animals.

Hi - I’ve got, not a fursuit per se, but a full-body costume that I wear to basically any event where it’s appropriate to do so. It is very common for parents to come and ask to take their kids’ pictures with me, not the other way around. I have in fact never approached anyone looking to have a picture taken, but kids still come interact with me - with their parents present - all the time.

You can certainly make the argument that that’s irresponsible on the parents’ behalf because, asd you note, nobody can tell who I am, but blaming furries for that is just wild.

Re: the zoo, furries tend, generally speaking, to be very pro-animal rights. Furries as a whole donate a lot of money to animal-benefiting charities and whatnot. (Most furry conventions include fundraising for some charity or another.) Furries also just tend to enjoy animals in general, and zoos tend to be the easiest place to go to see non-domesticated animals, so I’m not sure why you’d be surprised to see furries there.

The weird part comes from a lot of people not realizing it’s a sexual thing. Adults and kids both. It was only relatively recently I’ve heard of people wearing those suits for other things. That seems weird too, honestly. It would be like if people started wearing gimp outfits to family events and having parents ask if their kids can get a photo with them.

Even if not all people in gimp outfits are wearing them for sexual reasons, it’s still a thing that’s part of a sexual fetish. People starting to wear them to family events because kids who don’t understand that think it looks neat would be creepy.

Cakes are part of a sexual fetish; does that make all cakes weird? Should we not have them in public, or at kids’ birthdays? The fact that that isn’t their primary function probably suggests that no, they’re fine.

Sure, and you’ve been given the wrong impression. Much as with anything humans are involved with, it’s been sexualized in some segments - I know people who want to fuck mining equipment - but that isn’t at all representative of wthe whole subculture. You’re only seeing the “weird sex pervert” thing because that’s an easy way to attack a group (look at how trans people are being presented), not because that’s an accurate representation of the group given to you by well-informed authorities on the subject. It’s unfortunately the effects of pretty straightforward bigotry.

I’m in my late 40s and have been an internet nerd since chatting on usenet before ICQ was a thing… I’ve watched the fandom grow. It’s difficult to take someone saying the sex part isn’t sort of a big deal when it’s a community that seems to have mostly spread online and the sexualization has always been front and center. These days scrolling Reddit, Bluesky, and many other places online you’re pretty much guaranteed to see images of sexualized anthropomorphized animals.

Clearly, that must mean everyone out there, wearing human clothes, attending human events with children, they must be doing it because they’re all sex perverts who only want to trick the other humans into sexy sexing times! Disgusting!

I’m relaying an experience I’ve personally had with furries inviting children to take pictures with them while we were at the zoo.

I live in an area where it’s pretty common for furry events or meetups to happen at a regular occurrence.

It’s not that I’m surprised furries congregate at zoos. It’s that the sexualization of animals in the community feels weird to me to see them observing caged animals.

I grew up with deviantart around and the furry community has always presented as incredibly sexualized in my experience. It’s hard to separate that out these days.

There’s a pretty big divide between sexualizing animals and sexually explicit art of anthropomorphic characters. I think you’ll find that furries, as a whole, tend to be incredibly averse to the sexualization of actual animals, and to people who do so.

It’s hard to see that divide outside of furry circles is more my point.

I don’t say anything or try to ruin their fun if I see furries out and about, just to be clear. It raises some questions internally because of how the furry world has been presented to me.

If you’re getting your information from furries who actually participate in the community, I don’t understand your perspective at all.

I don’t care what consenting adults do with one another either, but the furry art and all of it has become so normalized that things like that happen. People are allowed to have weird sexual fetishes, but having them wear those costumes and play with kids who just see it as cute animal mascots is sketchy as hell, and the leering at zoo animals is just weird.

Like… it’s fine if two grown adults like to cover themselves in mayonnaise and do unusual things to one another with pine cones. But by fine I mean “you’re not hurting anyone, you’re both willing participants, so there’s nothing inherently immoral about it.” I don’t mean fine as in “this is totally sane and normal and you should not feel any sort of shame in it and should celebrate it publicly and hold MayoPiners festivals and introduce kids to your lifestyle.”

The costumes(with some exceptions) are just costumes though, not everyone who has a fursuit is even into the kinky stuff, you seem to be making a lot of assumptions and generalizations. It’s not all sexual.

If anything you might be the one oversexualizing here

How do you tell if someone wearing a fur suit is into the kinky stuff or not? I can’t tell out in public personally.

Same way you go around assuming most people aren’t wearing vibrators and butt plugs in public, because some definitely do but it’s probably best not to make negative assumptions about people.

Personally though I don’t even mind if people do kink in public so long as on a functional level it’s not noticeable or at risk of making others uncomfortable.

Mm that’s a good point on the wearable sex toys. I’ll make negative assumptions about people wearing those and knowingly involving non-consenting people in the kink though. Even if the other people are unaware. That’s creepy and borders on rape-like tendencies.

The Internet is full of those sexualized pictures. The pictures came before the suits were something most people could easily buy.

The sexualization started before people started wearing them in public for other things. The only reason the response wasn’t people freaking out was most didn’t know that and kids just see cute animal mascots.

It still seems like forcing the public to participate in a fetish without consent.

I didn’t say they’re not allowed to do whatever they want in the privacy of their own bedrooms. Broadcasting sexual fetishes is weird, though. It’s like loading the default Bluesky feed and seeing someone post about how they’re doing to go stick a cucumber in their bum. Some things are public things it’s fine to discuss anywhere. Some things are private things and generally shouldn’t be blasted out publicly on forums where the age to sign up is 13.

I didn’t say they’re not allowed to anything. I’m not unquestioned ruler of the world. I don’t have the power to let or not let anyone be who they want to be. I do still have the right to be myself, though, and be honest that it seems super creepy and weird.

How’s putting on an animal costume creepy or weird? It’s not like they are fucking in the street.

If you scroll through Reddit, or Bluesky, or many general online discussion centers you’ll see very clearly sexualized pictures of furry characters. The majority of images of those characters I run in to are sexualized, so that’s the impression left about those costumes.

I didn’t spend the last 35 years seeing a community of Disney fans constantly posting images of Mickey Mouse in a tight thong and Goofy staring at it and drooling. If I had then seeing kids going to a social event put on by members of that same community wearing those same costumers would definitely seem weird.

It’s why I compared it to gimp suits. They’re commonly seen as part of enacting a sexual fetish. People are wearing them in the street would seem weird and creepy, even if they weren’t fucking in the street. If they were fucking in the street it would go from creepy and weird to actively committing a crime.

What you’re complaining about is seeing actual fetish content on a website. Like, there’s porn and porn-adjacent stuff on the internet? Wowzers! It’s like seeing celebrity pictures in skimpy clothes on the celeb subs, or women in bikinis on Sports Illustrated.

What you need to do is curate your content a bit more, not police others’ preferences.

Having sex with animals is illegal and immoral. Having sex with minors is illegal and immoral. Images sexualizing children are generally unwelcome, because that’s fucked up. Images sexualizing animals have somehow become welcome, even though that is also fucked up.

People vocalizing dislike of any thing could be said to be using the same arguments used by racists and homophobes if you replace the actual thing they dislike with “gays” or “blacks.” This has nothing to do with LGBTQ+ anything. That’s a lazy excuse to try to make people saying anything you don’t like look bad.

dude, damn near nobody is cumming in their $8000+ fursuit or covering it with lube.

Having a basic low cost gimp suit to get dirty with use and a really nice expensive gimp suit that you keep clean doesn’t make wearing either one in public any less weird.

Except for your argument is dog shit based on your own previous statements in this thread. It would be much more apt to say that we put on our Sunday best when we’re out in public, but when we’re specifically going to play with with each other in private we’re wearing board shorts and tank tops. Almost like there are two completely different types of clothing for different situations. your falsely trying to say they are one in the same thing.

I’m not trying to preach anything, I very definitely do see them as the same thing. Having a different “suit” to keep looking nice and not all matted and caked in bodily fluids doesn’t mean wearing the nice one in public is less creepy. It’s changing into the “sunday best” gimp suit.

If a group of people suddenly decided they liked having wearing gas masks and adult sized baby diapers and roleplaying as babies during sex it would be creepy and weird, and them wearing the same sort of outfit in public even more so regardless of how fancy their public gas masks and diapers look.

Wanting to have sex with animals or anthropomorphized animals in general is creepy. The sexualized art is creepy, the all of it. There is nothing about it I don’t find to be weird and creepy.

Something tells me they are turned on by the furry porn and reacting the same way Republicans loudly denounce gay porn after they watch it

    1. Being a furry has nothing to do with sex. It’s kinda like cosplaying a character that you make up (it’s called a fursona). Why? Cuz fursonas are cute. Animated stuff and cartoon like stuff is fun! Furry art, fursuits and stuff is art. Art is fun to participate in and/or appreciate.
    2. Humans are sexual creatures. So many other hobbies are sexualised. Football porn exists, where sexy athletic folk have sex. Is football purely a sexual sport then? No. Absolutely the same applies for furries.
    3. If an act isn’t harming anyone, it’s none of your business. Some people like eating shit and drinking piss. You might not enjoy it. Being worried about what others are doing in their bedroom (unless it’s non consensual and hurting yourself/society) is absolutely none of your business.

The t-shirt here is obviously a shitpost. Also, don’t mix pedo shit with furries. Straight pedos exist. Is me saying, “ooooh the idea of being a heterosexual is so creepy with people calling each other daddy/mommy. Especially the kind of porn where they fuck kids” appropriate? No, anyone who says something like this is a dumbass.

Hitler loved animals. Are all animal lovers Nazis now? Similarly, a subset of furries are pedos who produce pedo art. Are all furries pedos now? Come on…

The furry community is a place where generally autistic folk, who are also, generally queer come together to be cringey and fun. It’s a safe space, completely separate from the sadness in the world, the politics and such. It’s a place where well, you dress up as a fkin cute animal and do cute, “cringey” stuff without anyone judging you.

When you make weird ass connections like these (like the pedo connection) without actually attempting to understand and learn, you just become someone who hurts other people who just want to exist and do their own thing.

    This either makes you:

    • an idiot
    • someone who deliberately wants to hurt other people for literally no reason.

    So not cool. Be better.

You missed the point of things I’d said so many times in that, that there’s really no much to reply to. If you do have a developmental disability that’s not a thing I would insult.

I said many times that I don’t care what other people do in the privacy of their own bedrooms. However just like your own example of people literally eating shit, this one is also creepy and weird. Yes, it’s completely acceptable to say that people eating shit is creepy and weird. And it definitely is.

I suggested writing CSS last post, this post I suggest an alternative:

    • Open UBlock Origin quick menu
    • Click the cursor hover icon
    • Click on some profile picture
    • Fuck with the sliders if you want
    • Done

Amazing! No more furries exist on the internet. Like ever. Zero. Well, to you, none. They may still exist, you just probably wouldn’t know it.

Saying that you find a thing creepy and weird isn’t attacking anyone. Another person here used people literally eating shit as an example. Would you not say that people getting off literally eating shit is weird and creepy? Even if you wouldn’t, I sure would.

There are over 8 billion humans. We’re not all going to agree on the same things. There’s a huge distinction between honestly saying a thing is creepy and trying to form mobs to hunt people who do those things down.

Idgaf how you feel about it, be creeped out all you want, as others have pointed out this is the same rhetoric used to hate on gay and trans folks. I hate seeing this shit on here, Lemmy is for the queer, audhd, anti-establishment furry punks, and I like it that way.

It’s a bit insane to try to say no one can share opinions you don’t like or agree with. Yeah, of course the same things a person says to explain why they hate olives sounds like something much worse if you switch the word “olives” for “Jews.”

I’ve never seen anything on Lemmy that says it exists only for a few specific groups of people.

Some person with whom i vehemently disagreed once pointed this out to me, and it changed my perspective, so here goes:

Blocking people on Lemmy only makes it so that you can’t see anything they post. You aren’t notified when they post a comment replying to your own, but _everyone else can still see it. I recommend using user tags in certain colours, so I have one for that guy who constantly misuses the thorn (þ) in his posts, so that I’m mentally prepared for the gut punch as a student of Old Norse and Old English. That guy has a different colour flair than all of the astroturfers, crazed tankies, and dickbags, because you can set a LOT of different user tag colours. Rather than blocking them, just set them to a red flair, so that you can safely ignore anything they have to say, without potentially being slandered or otherwise made to look a fool without understanding why.

Yeah, I get that but don’t really care. I’d rather simply not have to see the idiocy, I don’t care if other idiots congregate in and tell them they’re very right and wise and it’s crazy to think wanting to have sex with animals, or kids, or blenders is creepy and weird.

Just scrolling through reddit /r/all when bored I’d always see at least one image, sometimes several. I’m not saying “porn”, just overtly sexualized anthropomorphized animals.

Running in to those animal people pictures it was extremely unlikely it would be two normal, not overly sexualized characters playing chess or something, but extremely likely to be giant animated animal-girl breasts.

Important to note that reddit and nearly all algorithmic social media measures look time so if you stop scrolling even for a split second when you see something it shows you more of that thing.
