People love using thinly veiled existing racist/homophobic slurs against AI. “Tinskin”, “wireback”, “cogsucker”, “clanker.”
Yes, I know that “clanker” was in Star Wars. That’s not what made it so popular, and the majority of people using it today likely never saw it there. People also use “clanka” and leave comments about using “the hard r.”

There are people places like Lemmy who spent their lives being called or watching their families be called the terms people are so lightly tossing about today. Do you really think that doesn’t bother any of them?
It seems like so many people were just eagerly waiting for something they felt it was socially acceptable to hurl slurs and abuse at, and happily reached for terms just like the ones they already knew.
Some kids at my niece’s school now think it’s cute to stare at black kids and talk loudly about how much they hate “clankas” making it very clear what they mean by it.
It’s one thing to dislike AI, how it’s been developed, and the intent of replacing human jobs. To insult AI and the people behind it.
It’s something completely different to jump in with constant streams of thinly veiled existing slurs that can and do hurt real people.
its not used as a functional term. it is used as a slur but the person using it could as easily call all people who look hispanic as illegal. that is what I mean by funtionally equivalent. it literally means you illegally entered by crossing a river. so its a bit more precise than illegal. the point is you are not going to get rid of everything and at some point it becomes annoying for people to push for it. I will call someone a cock sucker or tell them to blow me and women use the term blow me. language is wierd.

slurs are slurs for as long as they are slurs. neck beard has become some sort of slure nowadays but never was before. There was something like that for irish at some time. There was a whole hubub a few decades back about not using black and saying afro american which became not ok so african american and ultimately it was never able to be moved over because its all to wordy and its kinda wierd given nobody treated white like it should not be used. so black won out. I have sometimes seen people talk like oriental is a slur when it was just a common term that was never used that way and actually has another term oxidental or something which means from the west or some such. something that was a slur kinda is chinaman which was really just low class people shortening chinese man. it was used as a slur by low class people and in some ways when used in media is making more fun of the person saying it than the person being slured to. granted all the southern good olde boys we made fun of seem to be running the country.

ive taken both. none have eliminated everyday jargon or the way people talk. you may be correct why afroamerican and african american stopped being a thing but the point is you had people taking a relatively ordinary word and making it out to be worse than it was. the more something is recognized as bad the more it is a slur. if cocksucker is taboo then it will never be normal to suck cock. the day someone is called a cockesucker and most anyone would shrug and be like so. that is what causes it to leave the language as a slur. not saying. no no. saying that is no no.
Just because you don’t see people being attacked with some slurs all the time in your immediate vicinity doesn’t mean that thing doesn’t happen very often in different places. You using the slur meaning well doesn’t help. You not understanding why it’s a problem doesn’t mean it isn’t.
so. there will always be slurs. you getting people who generally don’t use them to use them less is not going to make slurs go away. If I had to choose between universal healthcare, equal and adequate education funding, lower wealth disparity, or people not using slurs for my country it would come in dead last.
Of course, you’d choose the thing that isn’t a personal problem in your own life last.
