Level 4 is thinking “how can this even working?!,” spending the next 3 days delving into the bowels of the code, being so horrified by the unholy string of decisions that allows the prod codebase to function, and then having the experience and maturity to know it’s better to leave it the hell alone.
I had one of those when I was making a nintendo ds game and trying to get animated sprites working. I got one working great. Then i added a 2nd, figuring itd be simple. Nope. Instant crash. So i removed the 2nd sprite. Crash. Wtf??? So i cleaned the project and built again and it worked. Until i added a 2nd one and had to remove it and clean it again.
Once i looked into the code(issue with ptrs), i had NO EARTHLY IDEA why the first sprite worked at all!
The other day one of the other devs messaged me with “you wanna see a dead body?”
He’d found some code that had been running in production since 2003, with so many problems and smells. Wasn’t in source control, either. Many hard coded plain text passwords.
Sadly, he had to touch it enough to fix a production outage.

hell is other people’s code
You don’t like looking at 200+ line methods that have a complexity of 50+?
