Apparaten verplicht repareerbaar door nieuwe EU-wet

Iedere wasmachine, telefoon of televisie die je vanaf morgen in Europa koopt, moet beter repareerbaar zijn. Dan treedt namelijk de Europese Right to Repair Act in werking. Wat dat in de praktijk betekent, bespreken we met Ruth Mugge, hoogleraar Ontwerpen voor duurzaam consumentengedrag aan de TU Delft, en Oscar Visser, CFO van Fairphone.

The products covered by the obligation to repair currently include:

  • washing machines and washer-dryers
  • dishwashers
  • refrigerators
  • electronic displays
  • welding equipment
  • servers and data storage products
  • mobile phones, cordless phones and tablets
  • tumble dryers
  • e-bikes and e-scooters batteries (from 18 February 2027)
  • local space heaters

    We use international couriers in our country that provide a very nice service. For online purchases in the US, Europe and China, when you subscribe (not a subscription though, bit that’s what they call it) you get an ID that is basically your PO box with the company, and they have physical addresses in Miami, Barcelona and Shenzen (I think that’s how it’s spelled) and you can buy from pretty much anywhere, they will receive it, bring it into the country (legally, so we may need to pay customs depending on item, FOB price and amounts) and charge a fixed fee per pound.

    This has allowed us to buy from anywhere. I’ve been able to get StarLabs laptops while also buying pixel phones in the US to flash with GrapheneOS.

    I’m pretty sure more countries have similar facilities.
