I disabled Brave shields to use this site and then my phone turned into an air fryer from all the bloatware it was loading. Temps went up like 20 DC.

The spite I have for fandom… is… so… intense

Numbers go brrrr

I just browse Fandom pages using Internet Archive (or sometimes other archival sites except for Archive.Today and I won’t be explaining why here)
Also Fandom has not been good in years there where controversies such as: that incident Mcdonalds paid turning the Grimace page into a ad,intrusive ads,not much protection against vandalism and so on…

How to allow ads on school & corporate networks

Seems pretty fucking sketchy. “Please use these tricks to bypass your admin”

You should use the plugin Indie Wiki Buddy. It’s better than the people saying “just use Breeze Wiki.” It actively transfers you to the indie wiki option even when you select a Fandom link (if you have the option set). It also does a lot more than just Breeze Wiki. You can toggle certain wikis on or off and set their priorities. For example, some games won’t have a Breeze Wiki page, but they will have some other Wiki, and this handles that without you having to think about it.

I block and and all sites that demand I turn off adblockers. Like, they don’t even show up in searches.

    UBlacklist FTMFW.

Firefox with Ublock Origin doesn’t have this issue. (Or whatever Firefox derivative you prefer.) Please stop using Chromium-based browsers. Google is actively trying to kill adblocking. Stick with Gecko.

As someone who has used AdBlocker for as long as I can remember, I can’t come up with a single reason why sites should allow it. Exact same thing with the YouTube controversy. Of course I don’t like that they’re trying to prevent me from blocking the ads but I sure don’t blame them for it. Using an adblocker doesn’t necessitate for me to come up with justifications for convincing myself that what I’m doing is actually moral because it’s not. I’m perfectly capable of holding both of these two thoughts in my mind at the same time.

My test for whether behaviour is good or not is to consider what the world would be like if everyone did what I do and whether we’d all be better off for it. There one thing is for absolute certain: YouTube would not exist as a free platform. It would either not exist at all or it would be a subscription-based only.

You can have an ad-free service or you can have a free one but you can’t have both and demanding that is ridiculous. Even now, the sole reason you’re able to use Lemmy for free is because someone else is willing to take the financial hit by paying for the instance upkeep. We all just take it for granted.

If you’re old enough, you remember that people put content up for free on the pre-Youtube internet and it was a much better place when made up of only enthusiasts and hobbyists. If Youtube and all its users treating the internet as a vessel for making money went away it would be glorious.

Someone is still paying for hosting that content. That works for text, pictures and gifs but once you move to videos it starts getting expensive. I too put content on YouTube without any intention to make money from it but I still understand that it costs YouTube money.

I’m all for passion projects but it still needs to be sustainable one way or another.
