How does one follow from the other? You’re just making a statement without any explanation about your reasoning.

If contributing to the economy the most means lower taxes then doesn’t that suggest that the people with lowest income would be the ones taxed the highest? Doesn’t quite fit my sense of fairness.

    Downvote.

Because describing the status quo is not a good ‘unpopular opinion’

    You are main stream.

Rich people don’t do shit except collect the rents of being the owners of the wealth of our society.

Or at best happen to position themselves as the owners of an idea whose time has come. But even in that case, it’s the workers and the timing and placement in the market that make them rich. They just happened to be in the right place at the right time, and were skilled at conning people.

The top 1% of earners in the US pays 38.4% of all income tax and the top 10% paid 70.5% of it. The bottom 50% paid 3.3%. These are from 2023.

Ok and? The purpose of taxes is, in part, to redistribute wealth from where it went to where it should have gone in the first place if the rich weren’t swindling us all. It doesn’t work as well as it should but it’s a start.

Those numbers should be more like 100% imo.

I’m simply countering your claim that rich people do nothing but collect rent. They in-fact fund almost everything that’s paid with tax-payer money.

This is like crediting thrives because a portion of their income is recovered by the police and returned to their victims. No. Just no.

This is lazy for UO; please give the basic arguments in favor, over the usual objections. Put 'em in the OP.

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it’s something that’s widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

I feel uninspired to follow that rule for a low-effort post though… There’s no defense in the OP body.

Lol definitely unpopular, you get an upvote.

Contribute more like… to climate change? Authoritarianism? Eroding democracy? Extractinf resources from everyone and everything? Redistributing wealth to the upper class? Keeping wages low? Restricting technological advancement? There’s so much wrong here it’s hard to know where to start.

They spend lots of money in their lifestyles and that money goes into the economy.

Taytay probably spends more money in a year than you will in your lifetime.

They spend lots of money in their lifestyles and that money goes into the economy.

They also tend to be experts at tax-dodging, which takes much more money out of the loop. Panama Papers, anyone?

Besides which, when they shop luxury items, it’s probably going to other rich people for the most part.

They hoard much more than they spend. Hoarded wealth harms the economy. Taxation puts hoarded wealth into the hands of people who need it, and thus spend it, resulting in a much larger boost to the economy.
