  • Happened to me. I’ve had both. Companies that say they’ll never do ask for that and companies that use a texted code to verify you over the phone or even in a helper chat. (I think Apple might even do it but I haven’t used their help in awhile)

So when I got a call from a number that was spoofing a payment app’s info, i didn’t think much of it when they asked for a code. But as soon as I said it, I knew I fucked up since I didn’t initiate the call. They tried to buy $500 gift cards with it but because I realized it so quickly I was able to get it stopped by the real company and my bank.

I genuinely think I’m pretty good at recognizing scams and have a high “tech IQ” but they got me here.

I always tell people this story so they know it really can happen to anyone, no matter how good you might be. I don’t want anyone to be embarrassed about getting help when it happens to them.

  • 88 was my favorite number for a long time until I found out that Nazis were using it. Bummer. I’m weirdly still sad about it.

I can’t even tell you why it was my favorite number. I think as a kid, I always heard people pick 7 and I just wanted to be different so I leaned into 8s. Idk.

Now, I struggles because I like 8s but I don’t want to be a Nazi. F’ing Nazis ruin everything.

Guess I could just like 8 or 888, haha.

  • I don’t know if this AT&T service covered all of NY but for sake of my point I’m going to assume it covers most to all of NY. Obviously, not everyone would subscribe to AT&T either. I’m generalizing a bit to make a point.

There are approx 8.5 mil households in NY and 1.7 mil qualified for the previous affordable broadband law (couldn’t find an exact number for this current law).

If they charge $60 for the service that’s a potential total of $512,000,000 for NY.

    If 1.7 mil get broadband for $15 that’s $25,500,000.

So AT&T is willing to give up a potential $487,000,00 from all other NY customers just to spite low income families.

Note: this is income before any AT&T expenses, just to be clear and fair.

Edit I was clear or the article wasn’t clear.

    1. ATT is pulling 5G service from existing customers. They were given a 45 day window to find a new provider. I’m not talking about new construction.

    2. they are not obligated to provide fiber at $15. Only broadband. I know there are still expenses with that, but there is much more broadband already available than fiber.
