Strongly suspect this letter was probably organized quickly since multiple very outspoken dems aren’t on there. Probably prioritized getting out faster rather than getting people signing

Even if there’s no action it does still matter in so far as it reminds you that Trump is not all-powerful. Trump wants to present the appearance of 100% power so that everyone obeys before he actually has to make them (which he might not be able to do)

Words going against him from major Republicans indirectly normalize others resisting in ways that actually matter

Edit: Which is not to say that Mike Johnson shouldn’t take action (he should), just not to discount the importance of normalizing criticism when Trump’s strategy is to go high speed and make it seem like no one is fighting back

Don’t do Trump’s work for him by spreading apathy and dispair. He wants us complacent and to forget the power we have. He is far weaker than he seems so he has to project absolute power. Don’t give anything to him for free

Local and state officals can enforce laws on their own without federal involvement

Assuming everything is doomed to fail is exactly what Trump and Musk want from you. They want you to stop fighting or trying because you might realize they are weaker than you think. Don’t do their work for them

The state and local is where most of the progress is going to happen in the next 4 years. They control a lot more than you think - even including running elections for federal office. Pay attention to all your local elections - they are going to matter a lot

And note that the dems only have power on this if republicans fight each other like last time. Reconciliation means it only requires a strict majority on spending bills (but can only be used a couple of times per year)

Meta has to want to follow Musks as example explicitly. If he look at Musk, that’s a worrying trajectory. Elon Musk specifically boosts his own posts on Twitter over others even if you don’t follow him. He downranks anything with the word cisgender. He boosts accounts that pay him for checkmarks and has taken those checkmarks away from people who criticize him

I’m also going be real that this is also the least of my concerns for a platform. If they make some people change their handle that don’t need to, it really isn’t a massive deal in the grand scheme of things. Especially since when handles are changed on Bluesky, all the references to that handle also change because they have a constant ID for all accounts. Impersonations leading people to scams is a much larger issue

? Did you read what the article? The change here is pretty minor and just reserving the @name.bsk.social if they verify with a domain to something like @domain.tld

Now, users that verify their account by linking their domain name get to automatically keep the default @username.bsky.social username

There are other app views in the works from other people, but yes in the current state it is rather centralized. That’s why I started off saying it was semi-decentralized. I wasn’t claiming it was super decentralized

YouTube does have 8k support and a handful of 8k videos
