Just from the language up top and the reference to multiple orgs I assume this was in reference to the massive federal layoff last year that was presented as a voluntary retirement, but with the implicit threat that you’ll probably be laid off in 6 months if you don’t take it. One of the justifications from DOGE was that we were all more productive now.

Technology@lemmy.world•Commodore 64's New Flip Phone Skips Android for Linux-Based Sailfish OSEnglish
4·27 days agoSidephone, key phone, ikko one with the optional keyboard, upcoming clicks communicator, and dumber mini are all modern semi-smart keyboard phones at or below their discounted introductory price for the base model, with similar enough specs in most areas. Most of these are on some sort of privacy AOSP rom too.
And that’s not including all the unihertz, blue fox, and other Chinese phones that would compete
Curious why that year? You have to go much older to predate any surveillance tech. Like some cars in the 90s had GPSs embedded, not sure when the ability to offload data arose but no later than 2007 in OnStar equiped vehicles.

United States | News & Politics@lemmy.ml•‘STAGED’: Conspiracy Theories Are Everywhere Following White House Correspondents' Dinner Shooting
651·3 months agoWouldn’t surprise me either way tbh. He’s a historically unpopular president who’s daily doing things that are getting people killed or making their lives harder, a lot of people probably do want to off him. On the other hand, staging another assassination attempt is exactly the kind of crude showmanship he would go for and that will probably work on his base.

Supernote is an eNotebook and is writing focused rather than book focused, but it uses a stripped down fork of android and you can easily side load other android apps onto it including e.g. F-droid. You can use it without an account and with no network connectivity (loading content via USB), or your choice of cloud providers, including recently self-hosted storage.
I mostly read library books so unfortunately I have to go through Kindle, but you can use the Kindle app on the device and it works pretty well. Not as many features as a dedicated device, but the basics work great.
Major caveat: it’s not backlit so you need a book light/lamp/headlamp, which is a big pain.

6·8 months agoAt this point who cares, it’s a distraction, “what about the emails!” Even if it’s true, she’s not the sitting president and they were both adults.
I think machine compatibility plays a huge role, some machines do mostly ‘just work’ while others are a pain. It also definitely requires some tinkering, though mostly on setup or on the first week or two in my experience.
Also, ymmv and a lot of people swear by them but I’ve never had good luck with Ubuntu based distro, they’ve always been super buggy with hard to track fixes for me. I like fedora a lot better and it similarly has decent (though not nearly as extensive) community support for weird bugs, but I know people swear by many things.

A Boring Dystopia@lemmy.world•Here’s why there are so few new cars for under $30,000
321·1 year agoUsed to be true, not consistently so since COVID or so. I had to buy a car about two years ago and brand new cars with full warranties were only $1-2k more and with better financing offers than 2-4 year used cars with limited warranties. It got better for a bit but apparently used car prices are spiking again

Yeah, definitely think there are use cases for this (look at how popular the xeink X4 has gotten), but a device smaller in most dimensions than modern smartphones isn’t gonna make a good general purpose ereader for many people
