I haven’t had as bad of an experience with Nvidia as people say - but ofc your mileage may vary depending on your compositor, the apps you use, the distro you use, etc.

It was really annoying and it took me a while to find the issue, because if you just try to google it you find lots of people with lots of different issues, all manifesting in the same way.
If you’re lucky this is your issue too, and the fix above should do it. 🤞

I think this “it just works” experience depends much on the hardware and software you use. But no matter what, in the long term, if you’re not willing to put in time and learn how stuff works, how to troubleshoot, how to check logs, use the terminal, etc. I think you’re going to have a bad time and be disappointed.

I’ve used Linux exclusively for the past 10 years, both at home and at work, and I wouldn’t advise anyone who wants a care-free “it just works” experience. Linux is not good at that, and I think anyone who claims it is does more harm than good.

Linux is good for tinkering, self-hosting stuff, connectivity and flexibility. Most people want their games to work, not this. For me, I love it and I use it for everything including sim racing and VR games.

Afaik that’s deliberate to force the driver to get to the destination asap at all costs, but also to lie to the customer that their ride is just a few minutes away so there’s no need to cancel or look for alternatives.

You’re in a Linux community here man, you’re going to be outnumbered. I think people here genuinely don’t rely on Windows stuff as much as you think.

Last time I needed Windows was a few years ago when I wanted to do a firmware upgrade to my guitar processor. In the meantime I upgraded to one that itself runs Linux :)

I think lots of people exaggerate their need for certain apps. I understand if you need Photoshop for work because it may be the best tool for the job and an industry standard, but some people swear they “need” it when all they do is apply blur or red eye reduction to a picture once every 3 years. Nowadays you can probably do that in dozens of other ways.

I’ve been Linux only since late 2015 and in this time I “needed” a Windows VM ~ 2 times, but ofc personal experiences can vary greatly.

We’re not talking about the same thing here. First off a large jack to small jack adapter would be needed in rare circumstances, if you happen to use a pair of headphones that only uses a large jack with a small device like a phone, which obviously only has a small one.
That whole large jack discussion was started because of the quote from Wikipedia I posted, where they mention just how old the jack is. I’m guessing you haven’t read the rest of the comments since you brought it up?

2nd of all a jack adapter is just “wire”, it’s passive ( doesn’t have any circuitry), and doesn’t require any support.
For a dongle type of adapter that’s quite different. Software and hardware and compatibility come into play.
Lots of dongles have a DAC built into them which is separate from the phone DAC. It’s duplicating something you already have, and if your phone has a good one buit into it (which it should), the flimsy dongle most probably has a very cheap one.
I have a dongle and it only works if I plug it in before taking calls. If I already answer and then use the dongle the sound won’t work out of the headphones so it’s useless…
