Well, I’m on Lemmy myself, so perhaps that’s some sort of an indication of where I prefer to discuss thing with people in general, not just about AI. My list of blocked users is rather vast though, so a big part of the loudest haters are being filtered out from my feed. That surely contributes to the better experience here - or atleast less bad.

Well I’d say that for a person to be evil they’d need to be doing evil things with the sole intention of causing harm with nothing good coming out of it. Perhaps a good caricature of an evil person would be someone wanting to destroy the world including themselves. Admittedly such people absolutely does exists so maybe that debunks my own claim.
However if someone draws joy from causing harm to others I wouldn’t still call it evil but more like extreme disregard; you don’t care how others feel, only how it makes you feel. This is why I don’t think billionaires abusing the system for their own benefit makes them evil because causing harm is a byproduct of their selfish goals but not the intention of them. Similarly someone like Hitler wasn’t evil either because causing suffering to the jews was not the reason he set up the death camps but rather a way to achieve his other goals.

Well first of all, I don’t personally think evil even exists.
Secondly, I don’t think these people are any more or less “evil” than the rest of us. They just operate on a much larger scale that affects many more people. If any of us normal folk would be put under equivalent level of scrutiny as these guys with journalists combing thru our every social media post and paparazzis following us around combined with the intention to dig up dirt and contribute to the negative narrative that sells better than a positive one, we’d all look like them. Most people don’t like Gates, Musk or Zuck because that’s the conclusion they’ve independently arrived at. It’s how they’ve been told to think by the media.
Once a year is about how often I get sick. Even if wearing a face mask would bring that to zero it still wouldn’t be worth it because dealing with the mask every day is a bigger inconvenience that being sick for a few days a year.
I’ll rather deal with fever once a year than with a mask every day
Advertisements are for a large part about brand recognization. Even if you’re not going to buy the product, the fact that you remember the brand means the ad has worked.

Other than no longer being able to use an app to access twitter, I haven’t noticed anything else changing for the worse. They even made the “media” tab into grid rather than list which was a welcome update.
I do photography and I’ve heard people analyze my work and try and find some meaning, intention or a message that I’m trying to convey with it.
The reality is that I took 150 pictures and that was the one I liked the best. There’s nothing to it for me except how it looks. The fact that I managed to capture that specific photo is hardly anything but an accident. There is no meaning to it and whatever meaning one imagines seeing there is just in their mind. It’s a story you’re telling yourself and you’d come up with a similar story from a piece made by AI that you didn’t realize was such. If it stops being art at the moment you learn it was made by AI but you accept it as art when it was made by human even if it was, in fact, an accident, then that’s exactly the gatekeeping I’m talking about.

I’m fine by that. It’s not exactly how I see it but I have no argument against. It’s not what this thread is about.
Perfect is probably exaggerated but what I mean is the promp that produces the exact outcome you were looking for. Generative AI can produce very high quality pictures with a simple prompt but if you’re an artist with an exact vision in mind, it not so easy anymore to get AI to produce that for you.
Personally I find AI art to look like “AI-art” if that makes sense.
I know what you mean and while I generally agree I must still note that this only applies to the “bad” examples. It’s conceivable that you too have seen pieces you truly liked but didn’t realize were made by AI. This is something people often don’t seem to consider; AI art is only bad untill it isn’t.
Painters can either splash paint on the canvas or spend months working on a photorealistic masterpiece. There’s absolutely a difference in skill needed for both but to claim the former is not art would also be gatekeeping.
That argument also disregards the actual difficulty of crafting the perfect prompt to get the AI to output what you want it to. Anyone can create pictures with it but it’s not trivial to get it to create exactly what you want.
It’s a rather safe assumption. I too like to tell myself a story about how I can always spot fakes but I know it to not be true.
This is slightly off topic because we’re now discussing who the artist is, not wether it’s considered art.
My personal opinion on the matter is that artist is not a tool so by prompting them it’s still them whose creating the art piece. At best it would be considered a collaboration. The output is still art. I argue that the output of human and AI collaboration is also art.
How did they not create anything? They inserted a prompt into the tool and received a picture.
