Ah sorry, I meant using Vim in a GUI program. I wanted something with the flexibility of a mouse (quick navigation, context menu actions, etc.) without using a mouse. Using just the arrow keys, shift highlighting, etc. is just too slow when writing lots of text, and it doesn’t follow the natural position of typing.

I actually use VIM bindings in PyCharm, slightly cursed but actually works really well and meshes fairly nicely with the other IDE shortcuts. Being able to use it in any terminal is a nice bonus.

I honestly learned it just because I hated having to change hand position to use a mouse.

I avoided it for a while because it felt so clunky, but it has really improved in the last decade.

Lol as if these generations are doing anything different than they were doing before. Kids have always lied about their age to do adult things. Not saying it’s healthy, just like it wasn’t healthy for kids to get their older brother to buy cigs, but it’s not a unique problem and these generations are far from a “lost cause”.

For me it’s definitely Viscera Cleanup Detail. Super chill and satisfying cleaning game that I often boot up when I just want to shoot the shit with someone. There’s also quite a few custom maps after you get through the official ones.

Also Cities Skylines (the first one). Sometimes I just spend a couple hours watching my trains go around with a first person vehicle mod while I watch videos.

I’ve installed Mint on pretty much any old machine I can get my hands on. Right now I’m using it with KDE as my daily driver and couldn’t be happier.

I’d say for most people coming from windows, there’s little in the way of expected functionality that would be included in other distros.

To be fair even the most technically adept person can have tunnel vision where they start digging before ruling out all the simple stuff. Yes it can feel tedious and a little condescending to follow all those steps, but you get humbled the first time it really is just an unplugged cable.

I feel like there’s a specific peak between total technical ignorance and a weary understanding of how fickle technology can be. On this peak is the height of arrogance, where you believe you’ve really got everything figured out. Part of learning is understanding that, yes, sometimes you really did just forget to plug the modem in.

Huh?? The West has been almost entirely united behind Ukraine. I mean it’s the controversial stuff that gets clicks but there’s plenty of hatred for Russia to go around. Hell there’s graphic videos on Lemmy of Russian soldiers being blown to bits and no one bats an eye.

I mean, that’s kind of the whole problem. What is the point of ingesting The Great Gatsby if not for its artistry? It’s fiction, what information do you get out of it?

Unfortunately that popularity directly translates to the AIs ability to digest and paraphrase a book. LLMs have been trained on what is available in computer text format, which means mostly internet sources. English has an outsized presence on the internet compared the to actual number of native speakers, so there’s magnitudes more training data for it than any other language. The models of other languages will be severely limited, if AI companies have spent the resources to train them at all.

My real concern is that AI in its current form is not great at context and continuity. I see it similarly as translating between languages: Google can do a decent job of directly translating a phrase, even adjusting grammar a bit, but it can’t tell when it needs to explain or replace an idiom, or which details it definitely needs for symbolism and which can be safely disregarded, or detect when a word is being used in an archaic or unusual way.

So I think this would be a great project for a human with a keen understanding of literature to undertake, but honestly I think an AI paraphrasing without a large amount of editing would would give you a fairly bland and possibly confusing read.

I mean, there are some pretty legitimate concerns about employee welfare with Uber. Do the drivers get paid while waiting for customers?
