Technology@lemmy.world•California moves to exempt Linux from its upcoming age-verification law after backlash over forcing operating systems to collect users’ agesEnglish
1·19 days agoI bet this will be as easy to circumvent as changing the user agent of your browser and most developers outside of the US wont even bother to introduce age verification for a small fraction of their users.

Technology@lemmy.world•California moves to exempt Linux from its upcoming age-verification law after backlash over forcing operating systems to collect users’ agesEnglish
3·19 days agoSteamOS, ChromeOS and Android are Linux basedoperating systems though. Especially SteamOS is literally just an arch fork with steam preinstalled.
The GPUs from these data centers are virtually useless for end users. Even worse than the bitcoin ones, because at least a lot of bitcoin GPUs were consumer cards with a custom BIOS that could be reflashed. The ones in data centers are more dedicated l solutions as the companys building these data centers are much bigger.
The big question will be if Nvidia and AMD will survive the bubble burst.

Fuck AI@lemmy.world•DankPods - YouTube AI tries to create my content
4·2 months agoI‘m using this social network without the internet. It‘s basically happening in these places called „Pubs“ and „Clubs“ (which are like facebook groups) where you can chat with others with the same interest. You can even watch movies together and create art. Amazing stuff.

4·3 months agoThe little things are indicative of larger scale problems though. If an LLM gets simpler things wrong, what happens with more complex topics like science, medicine etc where the operator doesnt understand the full extent of the result.
And then, the very same CEOs that demanded the use of AI in decision making will be the ones that blame it for bad decisions.

8·5 months agoInstagram puts way more than 30% on their ads when purchasing through iOS
If you buy 100€ of ad budget, they want you to pay an additional 42.5% apple service fee and additional taxes here in Germany.
If I do it through their ad center suddenly the taxes are already included in the budget so if I pay 100€ I get 100€. So in the end, Meta charges iOS users an additional 70% vs what they usually charge.

Technology@lemmy.world•Vietnam Bans Unskippable Ads, Requires Skip Button to Appear After 5 Seconds - SaigoneerEnglish
81·5 months agoI don’t think you understood what I was trying to say:
The difference is that companys wont do the skippable ads by themselves. Each country will have to do their own legislation to mandate this. Even if Europe would do similiar legislation to Vietnam, YouTube would still show full ads in other countries because they make them way more money.
Which is quite the difference to hardware mandates like USB-C, where a few countries can basically set it as mandatory and the manufacturers will roll it out for all countries because its easier and cheaper to manufacture one model than multiple different versions.
It makes no sense for Apple to produce one iPhone with USB-C and one with lightning financially. But it makes a lot of sense for YouTube to show unskippable ads in every country that allows it to make more money.

Technology@lemmy.world•Vietnam Bans Unskippable Ads, Requires Skip Button to Appear After 5 Seconds - SaigoneerEnglish
26·5 months agoTheres a major difference though. It is much more costly and complicated to manufacture different hardware for different countries (especially with the eco system of peripherals behind it) than it is to change software for different countries.
Its easy for YouTube or Facebook to set all ads for Vietnam to skippable while maintaining unskippable ads for other countries to maximize profits.

I hate to break it to you, but we live in a time where the average users uses ChatGPT or Gemini instead of Google or Wikipedia to get information. Most of my coworkers use AI at least to some degree, even the technically more advanced users.
As much as I hate this, we can‘t just ignore it as if this wouldn‘t be the case. We are already in the Dead-Internet-Times and it will only get worse unless the bubble bursts, but even then we won‘t be at a point that we were at before this all started.

Three years ago when ChatGPT was starting to trickle down to the boomers, I was at a wedding where the brides father held a speech. It was the most generic nonsense I have ever heard and at the end he proudly said that this speech was written with ChatGPT. He wasn‘t even embarrassed.
