I switched thermostats due to the old one failing, and getting a basic smart thermostat was required for a hefty rebate that basically made it free… and the one I have now, the app thought my not-major-brand phone was a tablet. I couldn’t hit the button to turn down the heat, only up, because it was cut off due to scaling.

So yeah, requiring apps for interface is bad. Even if you are willing to use it there’s so freakin many various versions of android that it’s guaranteed to not work properly for a whole swath of people, mostly those on budget devices.

I think you give them too much credit. As long as it doesn’t actively hurt their numbers, like x, it’s just part of the budget.

I’m struggling heavily to find that OS to learn more about it (literally just got a google tcl tv delivered today, as my old one died last week), can you provide a link of some variety?

I was very heartened to find out that it’s just big android, so there’s likely a lot that can be done with it (but I got it to be dumb).

The only problem I found with this is that Roku knows it’s being blocked so it’ll kill some apps over time (like the Plex app) in a way that forces you to fully reinstall the app. Which means unblocking their domain and allowing them to phone home (or disabling/bypassing pihole), because the app downloads go through that domain as well.

Before I just factory reset them and denied them any internet at all, Plex would break and need to be reinstalled about every 2 months like clockwork, and it wasn’t due to app updates or anything. I know this because I did a test once; reset on one tv, and 2 weeks later on another one. The first called for an update at roughly the 2 month mark, and the other exactly two weeks later. Meanwhile an absolutely ancient Samsung tv still has a copy of the Plex app that hasn’t been updated in like 5 years (it’s a fully obsolete tv)… works fine.

My speculation is that it records the data for that period, and then breaks things you use so it can phone home when you are forced to connect it to fix it.

I’ve had this a lot. I’m almost 40, live alone, and never married, but I often get stuff addressed to “Mr and Mrs solarmonkey”… as a bonus, since my dad’s generation there have been zero new men with that last name (only girls from my dad and his brothers).

I love getting junk mail addressed to my mortgage co-signer, though. He has never lived here. Sometimes they address me with his last name, which is pretty funny (it’s my step-dad, and my mom died years ago, so we really don’t have much of a relationship at this point, and definitely don’t share a last name).

I like throwing that stuff directly in the recycling. If you don’t even know who I am that makes my job really easy.

No you weren’t being unreasonable. They absolutely weren’t trying to help you out of the kindness of their heart, they were trying to seamlessly get your info by just keeping the conversation moving, and not asking if you -want- to sign up, to which yes or no are the only answers. When they ask for your number it’s weird to answer as though they asked a yes or no question, and that’s intentional.

I’ve worked retail, I was trained on canvassing sales (just trained, I quit before I started because it was super shady tactics I wasn’t comfortable with), that tactic is 100% intentional to get the info without you thinking about it. Some places even give bonuses if the employees sign up a certain number of people. Nothing altruistic about any of it.

When you don’t follow their script they get confused… because it’s a script. Not because they think you are mad; they don’t care about you as long as you don’t yell at them. You are just nameless face #545 of the day.

Whenever someone asks for my number or email I smile and tell them “oh, I don’t have an account with you, and I really don’t want one, but thank you all the same.” It’s direct and maybe a bit rude to some people, but they typically apply whatever discount anyway, and if they don’t, meh.

If they ask for zip code or address, I tell them they don’t need it, and with those I will get rude if I get pushback. This includes when I call for product support or something and just have a question. “No, you don’t need to know anything about me to answer my questions, and I won’t be providing it unless I feel you need it, regardless what you think or what your system says.”

Well, the plus side is that people who want to know if they can outrun the local police will have a chance to find out that (probably) won’t result in them getting shot

I block those texts because yeah the stop thing doesn’t ever send confirmation, so I doubt it works.

You can also cut the flowers off after they open, and submerge them in white vinegar for 2-3 weeks, then strain. I do this with chive flowers (packed into the jar, but not so much there’s no room for liquid) and it makes a bright pink garlic chive vinegar that is really lovely. Onion would do the same, but probs look and taste a bit different.

Honestly, and I appreciate your feedback, I can’t imagine that’s actually my problem since I don’t have a life, but am super into protecting my personal security. I have 2 browsers running at most, plus voyager. Typically no other apps. And it crashes mostly while I’m actively writing stuff. Not on swapping. That’s why it’s so frustrating.

But like even if that weren’t the case, it would still be super frustrating even if some other related app had a similar problem in the past…? Like I’m asking it be done if possible. I know it’s a big ask.

I lived through a hurricane down in Texas. And because power was out for a week in my area, and I lived in an apartment, didn’t know how to prepare, and didn’t have many options, we did need supplies.

And there were more cops there to oversee the distribution than there were people distributing the FEMA aid.

If those cops had instead just helped distribute, they wouldn’t have needed cops there at all. The only reason they needed cops there was because it took 6 hours to get your care package of bananas, apples, bread, and water, and they didn’t have any shade available while waiting.
