So the graphics need to be in service to something.

Imo the problem is that studios have become risk adverse because their budget is so big, so they pick an already popular IP, choose a marketable aspect of that IP, and spend that fortune turning the dial of that aspect up to 11.

Like X but bigger map
Like Y but more playable characters
Like Z but better graphics
Etc
But none of the time actually innovating any new player experience.

And players are finally getting fed up with playing the same handful of AAA game experiences again and again with different titles.

I think a lot of people here aren’t looking at this in the right way:

They don’t have to accept accounts for student or let students interact. This can be an alternative system for disseminating announcements with optional mechanisms for feedback. All they need to do is federate and then any of their students subscribe.

I’ve been wishing that my my governments (at all levels) would do this so I can get notified of things like changes to bus schedules or closures of highways and shit.

It’s just gonna make premium more expensive because they have to recoup their engineering costs somehow and I don’t think that the extra ad views from bypassing as blockers will cover it.

IMO I think that’s more a reflection of business decisions rather than innate programmer skill.

Programmers used to do that because they had to do that, so the businesses valued it. Now they don’t have to do that, so businesses don’t allow them room to develop those skills.

I think that rate that people actually developed unnecessary skills outside of work likely remains the same, just the skills that people desire are different to the ones from back then.

I’ve not been a dev for that long, but I’ve been a dev for 15y or so. For the most part it seems to me like that is an effect of business decisions; workers will learn the skills that get recognized. Which skills those are has changed over time.

I don’t see older devs have that quality particularly more then younger devs, what I see is businesses that don’t value that type of behavior. And having worked with “wild West cowboy” coders before, the businesses may be right; they often make a real mess things and just rely on other people to clean up after them.

From what I’ve seen, there are lots of young people who invest in themselves and have passion for the craft, when the business allows them room to grow and doesn’t treat them like a code-producing machine.

That’s true, but that’s also just the general populous, who weren’t ever contributing to open source anyways.
I don’t think the quality of coders (professional or hobby) has really declined that much.

It’s not bad, it’s just not agile. Agile exists for projects where that simply isn’t possible. Its sacrificing a bit of potential best-case productivity to ensure you don’t get worst-case productivity.

The problem is that people realized that they could sell agile training to middle management if they changed it to be about making middle managers feel empowered and giving progress visibility to upper management.

This kind of superficial “journalism” rage-baiting boomers for clicks is really frustrating to me. Shit like this is brain-rot at least as bad as Tiktok is. It has always existed, but the extent to which it has replaced actual analysis and investigation is depressing.

Yes, the parents are partially at fault, of course. But as you indicated, there are significant societal pressures that force families into dynamics like this and it’s not realistic to expect an overwhelming majority to be able to resist it, alone. And since we’re not about to engage in class-based eugenics, it’s up to society to give them a serviceable ladder to climb out of their situation.

So, TLDR; I wanted to shine a light on deeper issues, so that people don’t think that this is solely a moral failing of parents, and that they DO understand that we have a collective responsibility to help families.
