These people are definitely the assholes in this situation.
I’m scared of dogs because I’ve been attacked by one before. I have a trauma reaction to them essentially. I wish more people understood this and were at least considerate of the idea that people have valid reasons for not wanting dogs in their space. I don’t care that your dog is awesome or whatever the fuck justification you want to use for being inconsiderate of others, my nervous system is terrified of it. I especially dislike people who walk their dogs off leash in busy areas.
I mean isn’t this literally part of Meta’s whole business strategy?
Don’t you dare fucking touch Wikipedia
I love your enthusiasm for research but if only it were that easy. I’m a phd researcher and my field is sexual violence. It’s really not that easy to just go out and interview child sex offenders about their experiences of perpetration.
As an autistic person this technology could actually allow me to access the community without being overwhelmed. This is revolutionary and would change my life.
Jordan Shanks isn’t for everyone and yeah I think he comes across as insensitive at times. I know some of his family members and to put it bluntly Jordan has a lot of room for improvement in his interpersonal skills.
But he’s not a piece of shit. Compared to Barilaro, Jordan is an upstanding, moral citizen.
Welcome to Australia’s defamation laws. Our whitleblower laws are also quite shit.
As someone who just submitted an article for review I am gobsmacked by how brazenly the authors have done this. The absolute disregard for integrity and the knowledge production process is astounding. But also the balls to just submit a paper like this without fear of the consequences says something more profound about the state of academia.
You’ve obviously never had a riveting conversation with a cat. They’re quite pleasant to converse with if you know how to engage with them.
I’m a phd student so I’ll just stick with my university library databases.
I lived through 2 weeks without power once after a storm. Made me realise how valuable physical information/ entertainment is.
Kinda glad that I kept most of my university textbooks and have a bunch of encyclopaedias and shit lying around.
I think giving into either of them too much has drawbacks. The criticisms I have of optimism are just as relevant to pessimism. Plus our perception of things can be influenced by pre-existing cognitive biases.
Not because of the racism that Stan identified though. They’re okay with drawing a line around ‘toxic behaviour’ but not the racism, ableism, sexism, transphobia and homophobia that they have platformed for years through their use of tweets on QandA.They should have immediately responded to Stan’s experience with an assessment of how their engagement with social media enabled the racist abuse directed at Stan. The ABC has a terrible problem with racism in their own institution and have not anything to address or remedy this. Stan is not the only person who has drawn attention to this and the ABC regularly receives complaints about people like Paul Barry while continuing to give them a platform.
STOP USING TWEETS ON QANDA THEN! After what happened with Stan Grant ABC really need to evaluate how they use social media sites like Twitter. They needed to do this the moment Stan raised it as an issue and had to step away from his role.
We have a similar thing in Australia with our supermarkets, airlines and media. Our governments have been equally as stagnant in trying to change things. Housing and utility prices are fucked as well.
It writes but it doesn’t think.
Simple thought experiment. If you were alive during Hitler’s death would you still feel the same way?
I don’t like the idea of celebrating death because there’s usually at least one person who is mourning and deserves to be respected in that. If people were celebrating the death of my loved one then yeah i’d feel pretty shitty about that.
But there is a certain category of person where this doesn’t apply. If you’re famous for doing war crimes then your death should be celebrated. It’s less about the person and more about what they symbolise. If you use your existence to bring such suffering upon the world then humanity kind of has a duty to celebrate the loss of that existence from the world.
