31·3 months agoI’m a big 2000 fan but yeah xp was mostly just 2000 with a more consumer oriented gui. 7 might actually be better, can’t think of any specific downgrades from 2000 to 7
I would run the lts versions of Ubuntu, 24.04. they are more stable
You can take away my auto complete, performance monitoring and all that jazz but you can’t tell me a debugging system isn’t absolutely essential if you actually want to finish a project in a reasonable amount of time

2·5 months ago2012 was when you could still easily upgrade your own ram, drive, fix your screen etc. if needed, modern MacBooks are not made like that. Also a 2012 i7 would not be fast enough for most people’s modern workloads. But like I said, they hardware is good, if it does break though, you are kinda fucked on mac

2·8 months agoThat’s not really true, if the working population is productive enough, then socialism can work. Capitalism allows for growth based on profitability not usefulness to society. Now I love sports, but what if the billions of dollar’s that went to pro and college sports were instead just directed into social programs. You don’t need a larger younger generation, just better prioritization of resources

3·9 months agoThe thing is, we have to be reasonable with our expectations. You or I may remember that Microsoft has always been shady and anti consumer, most people don’t. They remember a time when you bought things and owned them, and it didn’t feel like we were being nickel and dimed quite so hard. We are not going to start an anti Microsoft (or whatever corporation) movement and actually be able to rile the masses to support that cause, but we might at least be able to get them to demand things go back to the quality they were at 30 years ago

3·9 months agoGot it, thanks. I was thinking it can’t be as simple as plugging my firewall in and it just pulling an address
From a new users perspective, a lot of the main ones will probably feel very similar and the main difference you’d notice is stability and compatibility. Don’t overwhelm yourself with choices, just choose a easy to use, high user base, well supported distro to start on (Fedora, Ubuntu, Mint) and if you don’t like it move to something else later

I hate windows as much as the next lemmy user, but turning down a well paying job because I don’t want to use the OS 99+% of businesses use, means you must be at a level of stability I cannot even fathom.
And not you, but OP was kind of a dick calling IT lazy. As someone go works in IT myself, a lot of departments these days are woefully understaffed. We’re not going to support any extra software, causing us to work more overtime hours, because one douche is throwing a hissyfit
