  • Joplin is more directly comparable. The apps are open source and it offers sync with all kinds of targets. It monetises through a source available sync server (i.e you can run your own but you arent allowed to run it commercially) hosted by Joplin (Joplin Cloud)

For transparency im directly involved with Joplin as a volunteer (less so in recent months admittedly) so yeah, im a bit biased.

  • I have a whole bunch of these:

    • DevTerm
    • uConsole
    • GameShell
    • BeepBerry
    • PocketCHIP
    • PICOmputer 28

    Non-Linux:

    • Hand386
    • Book 8088
    • Forth Deck
    • T-Deck

I’m looking at getting a couple more as well. Honestly I don’t have much use for any of them but my favourite and the one I have used practically the most is my DevTerm. I love the style, the screen, its just a really fun little device.

  • I have an older, second hand Thinkpad Yoga but it has served me really well with Fedora installed on it.

I also have a PineTab 2 but that has been a little bit of a rough start and still doesn’t feel that great as a day to day device just yet

Honesyly I think I prefer the laptop form factor over tablet + smart cover. Even my old Android Asus Transformer I used almost exclusively in laptop mode to do anything productive.

I’ve just moved to Thunderbird. I was never keen on the old design and found it rather clunky but the new UI I find much better.

I was using Mailspring but it has recently just refused to work on my device and I never even got a response on the community forums so I’ve just given up on it.

  • Whilst I do understand that sentiment, with our project we have made as much effort as possible to make sure that nobody thinks we would ever do such a thing.

We are rather tight fisted with our donations and make sure we only spend them when absolutely necessary - none of it goes out as regular stipends for the team and all funds for expenses get sent in response to the actual bills incurred, I don’t think any of us would dream of siphoning it into our pockets.

We were even debating if we should use the “standard” funds to foot the bill for a new hosted service thing but felt this was a bit of a grey area - the service would be provided for free but footed by the donors of which only a small percentage would likely use it… We realise just how much of a privilege it is to be in receipt of the funds so we treat them with utmost reverence.

Not that I’m trying to encourage you to donate money to projects rather than time, I very much do the same as you and donate time and effort rather than money, but there are some good guys out there.
