I don’t think so, because Ubuntu is also controlled by a private company, and Ubuntu has issues with open source, making everything they do dual license, meaning they can choose to switch away from open source to proprietary on everything developed within the Ubuntu framework.

So choosing Ubuntu would be incredibly short sighted. Debian is a much stronger candidate. Or an in house distro based on Debian, until a common EU distro is ready, which is already planned.

Which is exactly what many have warned about for 20 years. The Microsoft lock-in is insane.
It’s better to get out sooner rather than later.
But considering most of EU is planning similar transitions, I’d be surprised if they don’t cooperate on making better import of MS formats in Libre Office.

The Danish government is also planning to make guidelines to make a smooth transition easier. Which will be available for private companies too.

Something that may make it easier is that it’s been law for more than a decade, that ALL documents from public services must be made in open standards.

We already have more Datacenters than we should have considering the size of our country Including Microsoft.
They like to settle here, because they can get cheap renewable energy, which they then use as part of their advertising propaganda to claim they are working for a greener environment, when in reality it’s Denmark that has made the investments in the infrastructure for it since the 70’s to make it possible.

This is very true, but this time it’s not just Denmark, it many countries in Europe, and it’s also EU itself.
We are just among the first to have decided to begin implementing it.

Yes average people need to learn the open source stack instead of Microsoft.
It used to be most people could just learn some Microsoft thing, and they were almost guaranteed a job. Obviously a lot of people will be unhappy that isn’t the case anymore, and they’ll be annoyed they have to learn something new.

But this should have been done 20 years ago when Linux was obviously ready for it, and sensible people have advised it for just as long.
In the old CP/M days we had lots of good software developed locally, but when IBM became dominant, and chose to use MS-Dos, Microsoft was very cleverly deviously leveraging that to sabotage the competition, and take mostly every main stream market.

Trump is kind of a blessing in disguise, because he finally got people to wake up to reality.

IDK if you read the article, but in 5 years cost of licenses paid to Microsoft increased 72%.
Also even if cost increase temporarily, it creates local jobs skills knowhow and tax revenue. Every “dollar” spend benefits the local community! instead of just sending the money to USA.
Servicing with open source and Linux will rapidly become cheaper than Microsoft, because there will be no artificial disruptions caused by Microsoft planned obsolescence or forced updates or whatever crap Microsoft is pushing.

Important notice in this regard is that there is agreement on this among both left and right wing politicians.
So this is NOT something that will change with new administrations in either government or local communities.

When this is implemented, I don’t see any way for Microsoft to get that business back!
