I remember our first personal computer had 40 columns on the screen, but we ended up getting an 80 column graphics card for it.
I taught myself basic, but the first language I took in college was fortran, and it was on cards. A bit of an aberration: they had moved on to somewhat more modern equipment, but the lab was being upgraded, so they reverted you the card system for a semester temporarily. It was out of date, but not wildly so at the time.
Well, it might or not be a line of code - depends a lot on the language. It’s 80 bytes, and a byte is one character. You could have continuation cards if your line was more than 80. That wasn’t ever needed for assembly language, rarely for Fortran, but very common for COBOL.
Seems about right. One card had 80 columns, a byte for each one, so 5,000,000 bytes divided by 80 would be 62,500 cards.
I always try to explain to people that the key is the last two letters: language model. An LLM is a model of what a conversation should look like. Ask it a question and it’s intended to give you a response that looks like the right kind of thing. So if you ask it for a mathematical proof, it will give you one, but unless the thing you’re asking has the same proof written the same way in lots of places online, what it gives you won’t be correct, and probably won’t actually make sense mathematically, but it will look like the right kind of thing.
So likewise, if you ask it for relationship advice, it’s going to give you something that looks legit, but you’re an idiot if you get your relationship advice from an LLM.
My first thought was “How is this a boomer thing, I see people of all ages doing this.”
Yeah, some things I don’t buy online because I want to hold it in my hand before I decide. Makes it tough when they’re locked up or bolted down.
That’s funny, and good on you for not being intimidated into being rushed or leaving. If they want to lock the stuff up, they should deal with the impact.
My wife and I have been paying attention to which companies are making significant donations to conservatives, and have been avoiding doing business with them, but now it’s getting tough as everyone is expected to kiss the ring. It’s about to the point where it might be easier to make a list of companies that haven’t.
Just recently, my wife wanted an eyebrow pencil, so we popped into a drugstore. All the makeup stuff was behind locked cabinets. We just turned around and went to a different store.
It seems like a particularly bad idea for anything that people might want to look at different versions of. If I wanted AA batteries that were locked, I might be okay saying, “Hey, can you grab me the batteries?” But for something that I want to look through the options, I’m not going to do that with the employee standing there tapping their foot.
Or he consider himself a crusader for a cause more than a vigilante and was carrying it to get more attention to his beliefs.
Not knowing anything about his death before reading the article, the headline made it sound like some odd coincidence. “Sudden death” makes it sound like something that just happened unexpectedly. Not sure why they didn’t just say “…before suicide.”
Isn’t this one of the LLMs that was partially trained on Reddit data? LLMs are inherently a model of a conversation or question/response based on their training data. That response looks very much like what I saw regularly on Reddit when I was there. This seems unsurprising.

My wife and I moved into our first house together on Halloween, 1995, so that night we drank a bottle of champagne, watched Young Frankenstein, and handed out candy. Every year since then we’ve done the same thing to celebrate our anniversary of living together, though sometime a different movie. This year, we couldn’t find our DVD, so decided to stream it and found what you did. Apparently Disney bought it and for some reason decided not to make it available. Very frustrating.
That seems high, though I guess if they’re doing it in a state with high renewable energy, that’s what they’re using. It uses a crazy high amount of energy though.

I’ve said it other places, but you don’t get a sense of just how bad they are until you see one in person. I don’t know if it’s that they’re a bit bigger than I thought, or that I’m used to seeing fake images of all sorts of things, but even though I’d seen pictures I was surprised at how bad they are in person. They’re cartoonishly awful.
Except unlike those others, this woman sued (for a bunch of things, not just the card thing), and the judge dismissed all of them saying she displayed a victim mentality over normal office interactions. I’m not faulting people for assuming she’s not very likable.
So dumb. A lot of people like to add just a little water to their whiskey. Does that mean they don’t like whiskey, just water?
Different people add different things to coffee in differing amounts. Some people add just a little salt to take away the bitterness. Some add high amounts of different things so that the coffee flavor is more in the background. It’s a huge spectrum. All of these people are drinking some coffee, so they like it at least somewhat. You’re trying to make it a binary, and even at that you’re saying that if they don’t like pure coffee then they don’t like the flavor of coffee at all, which is ridiculous.
Like many things here, it’s an unpopular opinion because it’s a moronic opinion.
