Apparently it is to use cloud services 😉 pixel phone storage was incredibly small. At least this phone has up to 512GB internal storage allegedly. For a ridicous price I assume.
Expandable storage is for photos, videos, music, books, etc… not for “important data.” Pixels made their storage tiny specifically to push users to use Google Drive, Google Photos (pushing the “clean your device” store everything in the cloud BS), YouTube Music, etc…
A vast majority of people also use their phone as an MP3 player and camera and apps, not just a chat device. My music library is not crazy and would not fit on a pixel together with my photos/videos, for example.
Have you read what Graphene Phone stands for? What their goal is?

What kind of idiot stores more than 50 gigabytes of important data on their phone?
You sound like you want a dumb phone instead of a smartphone…
What? What are you talking about?

Apparently not. Only been using it for 3 years.
If I only keep unimportant stuff on the sd card, can you explain what the problem is?
