Officials said they wanted to search the phone of Samuel Tunick, a Stop Cop City activist, for child abuse material. It was actually because he was suspected of “terrorist activities.”

Weird how the DHS isn’t stopping every Republican politician for suspected child abuse material, but they stopped a left-leaning activist who went to a protest.
It’s almost like we should never believe what they say or something.
And those ‘terrorist activities’?

“He opposed us building our fascist thuggery theme park”
Seems like an odd thing to lie about as alleged terrorist activities also give them the right to search the phone.
Classic playbook, you’ll see it used everywhere if you look closely.
Need to decrease public support of someone? Push a fake story out that they abuse kids or had child abuse material.
It’s the same “think of the children” bullshit they use for removing abortion rights, healthcare privacy, internet anonymity, location tracking, and any other law enforcement abuses that come up.

DHS is always lying. They get caught often enough that you know that you are seeing a small fraction of their criminal behavior.
But they’re allowed to do that. SCOTUS believes everyone at or near a border or within eyeshot of their agents is ripe for phone searching and whatever else they want to do because they don’t care.
SCOTUS also said that black people born in America weren’t citizens and that rounding people up into concentration camps based solely on their race was A-OK. SCOTUS has a long history of tyrannical bullshit rulings, so what’s your point?
Blatantly unconstitutional “rulings” don’t make DHS’s behavior legitimate; they only destroy the legitimacy of SCOTUS itself.
I think frustrated_phagocytosis is implying that they didn’t need this lie since they could already search his phone, which fits with the pattern of fascists lying out of habit than out of strategy.
No, they want to absolutely destroy this guy in every possible way they can. He opposed Cop City, and that makes it personal for the fascist pigs.
